They made the boxer engine for WWII, in the desert campaign.
They were made too late for that theatre of battle, but were made like that to stand the heat.
Cool better sticking out in the wind ,,the cylinders that is.

As much as I like the Italian mini HD, the XA is my fav engine design. I'd love to have one of those but they rarely turn up anymore.

Ural Russian motorcycles still builds them new with the later OHV motor. http://www.imz-ural.com/ The ChangJiang can be bought with the flathead still but quality is questionable at best. The Ural patrol and the gear up have the wheel on the side car driven off the rear wheel for 2wd by switching a lever! If I can find one with 2wd in any brand I will re-power it with a Valk or GW 1500 flat 6. If ya see one reasonable with a driven side car wheel LET ME KNOW!

Sorry to highjack, but what do you consider reasonable? (I have no knowledge as to what these should go for, but just decided to search my local Craigslist, and here's one for $8500 - http://dallas.craigslist.org/sdf/mcy/2582527762.html

Duel horizontally apposed twin like the BMWs of it's time... They "borrowed" it from BMW for the war effort because it held up riding in sandy conditions as well. Drive shaft just like the Beemer also. Saw a couple at the Harley museum in York a number of years ago.

Correct That's a cool place no doubt and everything in it will run or so they say. Rumor was it was moving to your state Sandy Not heard anything about the move in the last year or so.
