Quote
A motorcyclist ended up in the hospital Monday morning when he hit a stainless steel urinal on the Edens Expressway just past the Lake Cook Road southbound exit.
The urinal fell off a flatbed truck headed southbound on the Edens in the middle lane. According to police, at 6:35 a.m. the motorcyclist switched from the left lane to the middle and struck the urinal laying in the road, causing him to fall off his motorcycle. He suffered a broken left ankle and was transported to Evanston Hospital.
The flatbed truck driver was cited with failure to secure load and is scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 26.

About ten years ago around 6:15 am when it was still very dark out, a steel truck dropped a 6” wide flange steel beam on Westbound I-10 in Arizona just past the last illuminated area.  Two 15 passenger stretch vans running at 75MPH, which is the posted speed limit, carrying workers headed out to the Palo Verde Nuclear site hit the beam which laid across the road and the front tires were ripped off each of the vans.  I came through the area shortly after they hit it and saw the mess.  Anyone who had hit that on a motorcycle probably would not be here today.

Ladders and other construction materials on our Arizona freeways is a constant occurrence as well as “road gators” which seem to be our state predator especially in the summer months

Lucky 13 and I dodged a Toro Riding Mower in the slow lane on HWY321 outside of Maryville.

The Toyoto truck behind us was not so lucky as I saw him bow it up in my rear view mirror.

But glad one of us did not hit it on a cycle.

Can you say fire ball.

Ran over a hydraulic lift tailgate ( the whole damn thing. mounting brackets and all) off of a delivery truck on I65 in the dark just north of Indianapolis a few years back. First solo run after getting my CDL. Don't think they ever got those stains out of the seat!!!!

I spent a lot of time running up and down that road when I lived near Chicago but worked at the Marble Hill nuclear plant in lower Indiana so I am somewhat familiar with that road.  It probably wasn't at the time but reading your experience sounds funny.  Was it an uplifting moment in your life?

Nope not very uplifting. That damn thing was laying square in the lane, about 20ft past the scrape mark where it caught the bump in the road because the driver left it in the down position. Very expensive night!!!! 2 flotation steer tires, 2- 100 gallon aluminum fueltanks, 2- tag axle 22.5 tires, and 8- 22.5 drive tires. I was hauling a load of copper sludge on a roll off ( dumpster truck) and couldn't swerve because of the load shift. Definitely a religious moment!  angel

That's how I got my 20' extention ladder. It fell off the top of a cable installer's truck just ahead of me. I stopped and picked it up. The guy in the truck just kept going like nothing happened. Boy I bet he was confused trying to figure out how somebody stole that ladder off his truck going down that freeway. cooldude

FLA is the same way with the gators. I think the heat just makes em come loose. I once watched a recap come off a truck and destroy the front end of the minivan that hit it. I think the frigging things are a menace.

And unsecured or improperly secured loads are among the things that I have zero tolerance for. I will drop a dime on anyone I see pulling that kind of crap without hesitation.

Some years back, I was traveling east on I70 through Kansas and came across a mess of stuff scattered across the road.
Bicycle, chairs, washing machine ....
Then I saw an upside down pickup truck.
There were already several cars stopped.
After I stopped, I told them I would stop at the next place with a phone and report it.
This was before cell phones.
By the time I got it reported, the cops were already there.

Hitting a urinal on a roadway would certainly "PISS ME OFF".

Seems that this would depend upon the lane urine

Many years ago I was doing an Iron Butt ride from Louisville KY to Houston TX.  Came thru Arkansas after some violent storms.  About 3:00 am and roads still wet, I am haulin' ass in the right lane..... SURPRISE! ........ a 10 inch diameter tree trunk and most of the tree in the left lane!  SERIOUS pucker factor! could have reach out and touched the leafy parts.  Drove about 30 mph until the next exit.  Had to go sit out for an hour or so.

NOW I have a real torch for a headlight, still dislike the night rides, and always drive slow enough to handle any forest rats that might come my way.

Always plan for the worst case scenario!

Some years ago in a semi on I-55 in Mississippi a flat bed passed me. As it did a short but heavy piece of steel came off of his deck-bounced under my tractor(cabover) and busted up the transmission case. Needless to say i had to stop. I had the name of the company the tractor number the trailer number and the cops NEVER found this driver. Put the whole dang tractor/trailer on a hook and drug it to a dealership for repairs. Yuppers-it's dodgem cars out there. RIDE SAFE.

Spent a lifetime working for CA highways. The highway is a junkyard. Anything and everything transported on a vehicle will eventually be found laying in the middle of the road or along side. Large and small... I think I've seen it all. For nearly 25 years my company rig was rigged with a plow on the front. On my commute in my personal rig I often times stop to remove debris from the road... just in case some poor sap on a motorcycle a few miles away doesn't see it and runs up on or over it. Not long ago I came up on a gas bbq... all black naturally, in the middle of the lane -- at night. I damn near hit it myself, with the aid of good headlights on the car. Nothing surprises me any more when it comes to junk in the road. It's a jungle out there. yrmv,

last year we were heading to Chicago to visit family when we past Rockford we're booking along at 70 when we see some white stuff on the road, my wife thought it was a fresh kill deer, i thought it was a person 'cause i could see fabric, we swerved to miss it and we did, thankfully i was driving my F-150 truck so i wasn't too worried about hitting it anyway.  after about 100 yard there's a lady on the side of the road, i pulled over to see if she was alright.  As i approached i could see there was damage to her car, i asked her what she hit, SHE SAID A COUCH!!  it was really funny 'cause there were still pieces stuck under her car and everything!!  There was a cushion stuck on her right fender, it was a bit funny (for me anyway).  she was fine, not even shook up!  She told me AAA was on their way and that she didn't need help.

A few years ago on I65 just south of Birmingham in heavy traffic somebody had lost a 8 or 10 foot 4" x 4" and it had landed directly across the middle lane.  The way traffic was doing, no where to dodge and not enough time to brake, so people were hitting it at 70 - 75 mph.  I still shudder when I recall the sound of it being hit dead-on at that speed and what if a motorcycle had hit it like that.... Undecided

About 6 months ago I was behind a pickup with a love seat in the back. The way It was moving around made me think "I bet it's gonna fall off." I back away a bit just before it did but was still to close to keep from running over it. The Sequoia walked over it like nobodies business and I kept going. The pickup pulled over but I was in emergency mode (had to pee) so I kept going. After taking care of the emergency I surveyed the damage and there was none. Guess I hit it just right. If I had been on the bike, I wouldn't be here to tell ya'll about it.

When I first started riding I had a 78 GL1000 with full vetter setup, at this time I had only about 2 or 3 thousand miles of riding experience. My ex-wife & I were traveling back from Montreal to Toronto on the 401. We were doing around 120KMH when the semi ahead of us shed its recap.

It bounced in front of me and hit the fairing just above the wheel and under the light. It was the first and last time I ever wheelied a bike. I think I still have the fingerprint impressions from the ex wife on my ribs.

A loooong time ago when i was a LOT younger i moved furniture for a living. Fast forward to the 90s and thru retirement in 09. I noticed ALL over the country furniture- clothing- appliances etc etc etc that NEVER made it to the new home/apartment/storage locker. People tried to put too much stuff into a trailer or an open truck of some sort. Some years ago on I-20 in east Texas about O dark thirty around Longview Tx i helped the Tx Highway patrol and 2 or 3 other drivers take a 14 foot speed boat and motor off of I-20. No trailer no pick up just the friggin boat. Nobody hit the durn thing but they came close to us as we got the boat off the highway. Seen lotsa weird stuff over the years all across this fine country of ours. RIDE SAFE.
