My lady and I took took a little trip up to Colorado this past weekend. We spent most of our time between Durango and Ouray.

Here's a photo of the Valk on Colorado Route 550 between Durango and Silverton

The colors were about a week away from full color in the upper regions.

Proof that not all the horses a...s are in Washington.

We had lunch at The Handlebar Saloon in Silverton.  Westernbiker thanks for the tip and see my post on the Arizona board. The food was good, prices reasonable and great atmosphere.  I parked just a few feet away on Main Street because the parking directly in front of the entrance to Handlebars was loaded with stones and the Valk did not like that.

Route 550 between Silverton and Ouray is a riders dream and if you're not careful it will quickly turn into a nightmare because there are no guard rails.  The closer you get to Ouray the sharper the curves get and the drop offs become more significant. See two hairpin curves on the right hand side of this photo and an old mine complex just right of center.

O'Briens Pub in Ouray is a great place to eat. Reasonable prices, good food and large portions.

While Ken & Sue's is our favorite place to eat in Durango, The Old Tymers Cafe in Durango is tied for second.  It has good food at reasonable prices.  Available out door patio seating or large screen TV for the games.  It is a few blocks North of the busy part of Durango on Main and has easy close parking for bikes.

And finally, besides the great scenery and riding this is the main reason we go to Durango/Silverton.  We spend a lot of time chasing the D&S narrow gauge trains between Durango and Silverton.  The train runs at 25mph.  The road that runs parallel to the tracks has a 55-60 mph speed limit so we are pacing the train and trying not to get run over by the traffic.

One final thanks to Sandy for his technical assistance prior to the trip.  The Valk ran beautifully for the entire trip.  Lots of cleaning to do on it sometime this week.

Looks like you might be correct about that.  Then again there are so many of those elevation changing s curve switchbacks.  Obviously you remember the route.  Hope those flashbacks are not going to keep you awake at night.  Smiley Smiley

The Million Dollar highway is a great ride!  But it is very unforgiving if you lose your concentration.  We went there in August and had a great time.  The drive between Ridgeway and Telluride is also a wonderful ride with great vistas of the San Juans.

Every Labor Day weekend me and some friends ride to and spend the weekend in the four corners area.  Ride 550 north to Montrose on the way home.  Outstanding.

Great photos!
Our  first long trip on the Valk (and my first trip to the Rockies) went up this route.  In Ouray we stopped at a coffee shop owned by a sport biker.  Thanks for the memories.  cooldude

Do you participate in the Labor day Four Corners Biker Week festivities?  Every Labor Day weekend they have a big bike and vintage car parade in Durango.  Last year they must have had somewhere around 200 bikes in the parade.  Even the motorcycle cops who led the parade were trying to rap on the pipes and the parade featured a great female stunt rider group who did some tricks on dresser type bikes.

We rode the MDH 2 years ago, but it was not very pretty!  It was pitch dark at 11 am, raining buckets sideways, and then hit the pea sized HAIL!  Disco and I will never forget that trip on the Million Dollar Highway.
Thanks for the ride report.

So, that's what it was supposed to look like?

Thanks for posting, Cruzen!  Looks like a great trip.   cooldude

I want a do-over.  The first time through scarred me for days.  Kinda scared me, too.  I want to just go up there and loiter around from town to town.  You in, HayHauler?

Thanks for the post and pics.  On my second bike trip, we rode the Million Dollar Highway.  What
a beautiful ride.  Would love to ride it again.

Never tire of riding in Colorado.

THE YEAR was 1999---the first VALKYRIE RALLY was in Montrose Co. I spent 2 weeks there and loved every min. of the rides around the area. that singer --Joe Crocker-- his wife had a BAR-B- QUE for us to raise money for Joe's kids. the local kids -the mad dog ranch -was for under privileged in the area-the one day event raised 2400.00 for them . Joe came in for the last few min. he had been in L.A. and up all night . said he was goin to the house and feed the dogs and go to bed. crazy2

No, I'm not much for large group events.  We hit Durango and Ignacio a few times over the weekend, but spend most of the time riding around.
