Shades of 2006, my friend! When the Detroit Tigers SWEPT the Yankees in the AL Playoffs. Meet Cy Young Award winner, Justin Verlander And his friend, Major League Batting Champ, Miggy Cabrera You can't pitch around Miggy, Victor Martinez (DH) is batting .330 Pappa Grande has 49 Saves Prediction: Tigers in 4 (Only because of Curtis Granderson). This time, you can't pay off in stale biscuits! This is gonna be Fun! PLAY BALL!

remember to answer your phone when I call singing New York New York which is what we hear frank sinatra sing after each victory yanks in 7 2 extra inning games 2 blowouts 1 each way Rivera gets rocked in 1 game 2 saves Verlander gets knocked out in 6th inning game 1 (like the last time you called me during a game) It not really fun watching your friend's dreams get dashed but sometimes it is what it is Gig

I hope I'm wrong but I don't like the Tiger's chances against the yankees. Verlander is great but beyond him they I don't think they have enough starting pitching. Though Sabbathia IS quite beatable and is fat and out of shape which why he can barely get through six innings now and in the season series Detroit went 4-3 against the yankees so maybe I'm wrong.

Yes, check the stats. He's been a horse but as of the past couple months he's had trouble going deep into games. What he's done in the past is irrelevant as it relates to now.

come on Anvil give us a prediction and yes early bird thems were bagels I would but it's really tough to call the more I think about it. The yankee starting rotation beyond Sabbathia has issues as well. If you put a gun to my head I'd say Yankees in six, but I wouldn't put money on that.

Regardless of which overpaid ball club comes out of the NYY-Detroit series victorious they will have one little problem going any further............................................................. THE RAYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Don't count your chickens just yet boys. Fear the Trop! I'll be rooting for the Rays. I like that team, they're a bunch of gamers. Even if that city doesn't deserve them. The other night they barely had half the stadium filled to watch the team make a miraculous comeback and get in the post-season. But that's not the fault of the players.

It was a little more than 1/2 full, 28K in a 36K or so capacity. Still not adequate considering the quality of the baseball played there. The Trop is a lot of fun to enjoy a game in, just getting a little worn & definitely needs to be in a better location than the old Gas Plant local. We were at the game last Sunday vs. Toronto & BJ Upton popped his homer in the 1st inning two rows directly in front of me in left field. 'Bout knocked the wind out of the little kid that was in the seat. Ushers had him checked out at the Med center, retrieved the ball for him & gave him a pass to have BJ sign it for him after the game. Nice touch! Longo's homer a few innings later was headed right at us again but was so high it hit the cat walk on the "C" ring that holds up the roof & fell back on the field Ground rule home run. WOW, what a blast! Not a lot of extra $$ floating around the Bay area, at least not enough to support 81 sellouts a year. Things are tough. We go as often as we can but being 125 miles away it's a little hard to do consistently.

So, the Yanks need 7 games to wrap up a 5 game playoff series? Irregardless, the Tigers will advance to the ALCS. Here is an article from the Star Ledger for the numerically challenged regarding tonight's pitcher, Doug Fister (8-1 / 1.79 ERA), a former Yank prospect, that has been pitching lights out since coming to Detroit... Now the right-hander will become the de facto Game 1 starter after tonight’s American League Division Series opener between the Detroit Tigers and Yankees was suspended due to rain. It will restart Saturday night in the bottom of the second inning with Verlander having pitched just one inning and Fister taking over.
As a result, it will be Fister pitching the series’ most pivotal games for Detroit: Effectively the opening game and, if necessary, Game 5 after Tigers manager Jim Leyland said that the right-hander is in line to do so.
“I guess, lucky for me, I came out of the bullpen not too long ago,” Fister said, referring to the three innings he pitched in relief Sept. 21 as the only time he came out of the bullpen in the last three seasons. “So I guess it’s the same mentality. But, again, it’s same start time, same everything, same mentality.”
“It’s just kind of going to be expected (for) tomorrow to be my day — whether it’s the second inning or the first inning. Just come in and get outs.” When put in the context of his brethren in the Detroit Tigers’ playoff starting rotation, there is something so unspectacular about Fister. He does not have the dominant repertoire of Verlander or the live arm of Max Scherzer. The only thing stands out is his size and even that is deceiving.
At a lanky 6-8, his pitching style belies a man of his size. Fister does not overpower hitters or blow by them with a high-90s fastball. Instead he has excelled for Detroit thanks to use of four pitches and pinpoint command. A midseason acquisition by the Tigers, Fister has spent the past two months of the season as one of their best pitchers.
“Certainly, when we got him I didn’t know he would end up starting the second game of the playoffs,” Leyland said. “I couldn’t have predicted that when we got him. But as it turned out, I felt like he and Justin were our hottest pitchers.”
Fister spent the first four months of the season with the Seattle Mariners, using the spacious Safeco Field to his advantage. Yet, despite a 3.33 ERA he was left with an unlucky 3-12 record.
After being traded to Detroit on July 30, he has been exemplary. With the Tigers, he has run up an 8-1 record and 1.79 ERA. He has allowed one run or less in his past eight starts, allowing just four earned runs in 55⅔ innings in that time. He had always been one of the best command pitchers in the league, able to adroitly mix his fastball, slider, curveball and changeup to the tune of 146 strikeouts to 37 walks.
In particular, after joining Detroit, Fister also saw a spike in his strikeouts. In a Sept. 5 start at Cleveland, he struck out 13 Indians.
“I really couldn’t tell you,” Fister said of his improved ability. “I haven’t changed any approach, my mindset or figured out a new pitch. Trying to keep hitters off balance and mixing pitches a lot more than getting any patterns.”
A former Yankees draft pick, getting selected in the sixth round of the 2005 MLB Draft before choosing to return to Oregon State, now he will face them in the ALDS. His last start with the Mariners came July 26 at Yankee Stadium, when he went seven innings, allowing three earned runs and striking out five. At that time he was just a luckless pitcher on a losing team. He returns with a far greater profile.
“The Fister trade was a guy who was kind of under the radar at the trading deadline,” Leyland said. “We had him on our radar. There wasn’t a lot of talk about him. I would love to say I knew exactly what he was going to do, but I can’t tell that to you honestly. He has been fantastic.”

So, the Yanks need 7 games to wrap up a 5 game playoff series? Oh yeah, forgot about that. TT, actually I've been to a few games at the Trop with the family. We never planned it this way but for three of our vacas to Orlando the Sox just happened to be in Tampa. Tickets were cheap and easy to get so why not? The stadium itself is not a bad place to see a game. The neighborhood's a little sketchy but it's not like Oakland. Doug Fister might be the greatest name ever. I don't care if you're a baseball player or porn star, that's an awesome name. That said; I'm not sold that he's going to continue that kind of performance against a relentless lineup like the Yankees have. For that matter he AND Verlander both pitch in the weak-hitting AL Central so I'm not 100% sold on either. Remember all of the hullabaloo over James Shields a few years back? They called him "big game James" until he went out in the playoffs and proceeded to wilt under the pressure. Thing is; it's baseball. Of the major pro sports it's the hardest to predict because it's such an odd mix of team and individual effort. Almost EVERYONE picked the Red Sox to go to the WS and they didn't even make the playoffs. But I actually LIKE the Tigers and wish them success.

gig I may not know how many games or know the Yanks names individually but if the Yanks had a cheerleader squad you can bet I would have theirs and be posting them right now That would be a great idea Instead of paying 90 million for a 3rd baseman spend a million on some quality cheerleaders These would be red sox colors for instance, would look great in Yankee blue with a pinstripe then maybe I wouldnt keep falling asleep during the game

Hey Eddie, I'm can't argue with what you say! The Rays certainly know how to get the most out of the least. I love my Red Sox, but they sure didn't have nothing for the Rays this year. Besides, the Trop is a real weird place to play, what with catwalks, speakers, and more. ???

OSS: Yes, you called the 6th inning - what a nightmare! You also called the 1 Yankke blowout - that was Saturday, its out of the way now. Now the Tigers have home field advantage, Ace Verlander on the mound, and a Tiger blowout in the hole... Look for me on TV tonight. I'll be the guy in the stands. The stale biscuits are sounding mighty tasy!

So Gig, sorry about the Tigers getting shot down by Texas, at least I think it was Texas. didnt see any of the games nor will I see any of the series No cheerleaders, stupid sport How can they expect us to watch without cheerleaders? Basketball has em, Boxing has ring girls, football has em, rollerderby the gals themselves are the cheerleaders, but baseball, an ancient game indeed needs modernizing Now we both have lots of time to look forward to next year
