Hey Guys, Been following this forum for several years and have had 3 other valks, but this is the first time ive had to ask a question. Most of the time the answer is already on here. Heres my question. Just bought a 1999 Valk with 15000 miles and I noticed a loud rattling type noise that I only hear in 3rd, 4th and 5th gear. I cant really place where it is coming from, but it sounds like under the tank. This bike has lots of engine chrome, but I cant find any loose. This is not a clicking noise, but sounds like something is loose. Any help and opinions would be great help. Also the bike shifts and down shifts really smooth. Thanks

I have a 1999 standard with 13000 miles-3rd 4th and 5th gears make a pretty loud noise
especially at lower rpm's-My mechanic told me it was because of the straight cut gears
They are bulletproof but noisy-The noise sounds like it's coming from under the tank also
May be the same but not sure-kinda sonds like a rear end in a circle track race car-The
noise in mine is varied greatly by the throttle-It changes sound with more rpm's-And only
does it in 3rd 4th and 5th gears no noise in 1st and 2nd-Sounds kinda like a buzzing sound
or rattling sound.There's a post I also saw somewhere on the net about something under
the tank area the comes loose and makes a rattling sound-Someone on here for sure know's
about that-good luck!

Dr. Concrete, Does it have the sound of something loose ,maybe just kindly blowing around hitting something ? Thats about the best description I can give on the sound. Hey thanks for your response and maybe someone else can give me some other things to check out. Thanks

http://www.valkyrieriders.com/shoptalk/buzz.htmNot where he's pointing, the bolt above the first knuckle. Torque the crap out of it.  It is the cross-member sleeve that rattles, and sometimes torquing the nut does not tighten the rattling sleeve inside the frame.

Got Airwings? I started hearing a mysterious noise "somewhere under the tank"... I looked
all around, tightened the buzz bolt, finally I noticed that one of the chrome balls had fallen
off one of the airwings.

I am not saying this is your problem, but I had a rattling sound like something was loose and it was driving me crazy. Turns out it was the rear mount for the exhaust on the passenger pegs! I forgot to put the nuts back on when I switched exhausts!  |

You said it has some chrome. Check the tranny cover bolts, if you have them. One could be loose.

If the simple stuff is checked, then R&R the drive unit and check the U joint.

Could be that your ignition is too far advanced and the "rattle" you are hearing is damaging the motor because it is pre-ignition knock.

If you have the Kury tranny covers they do two things. One, they magnify the internal transmission noises. Foam padding or undercoat spray has been used to supress this effect. the second thing is they dont clear the motor but by a hair around the oil fill cap and can actually be rubbing and making a sound from that area. a rubber washer or similar on the one bolt that will increase clearance there should resolve it if that is what is going on

I heard a rattle today on my 97 when I was going over bumpy ground about 20 mph.
Checked all over, nothing noticeably loose, then kicked the silencers and voila!
They appear to be disintegrating inside!

A friend of mine said he had a rattle in his bike. We were riding the other day and he stopped and we swapped helmets because his had vents in it. I heard the same rattle from 35 to 65 mph. When we stopped he said he didn't hear it anymore and I told him I did. You my try this it worked for him.  |

My dad used to turn up the volume on the radio if he heard a new rattle in his car. Worked for him.
