Went to start the interstate yesterday morning after running through death valley at 115 degree outside the day  before  and  heard the dreaded hydro lock  clunk. I have never been one to turn off the fuel, except for long term storage, but from now on I will. Luckly I've been informed of the symptoms of this damaging  problem by our own vrcc amen, pulled the plugs rolled the bike and fuel spat from 3&4 put back plugs all good now. Back on the road now heading  to key west. Hydro lock is real, protect  your bike and prevent it. Aloha

Good deal ShiningHorse!  You used your brain instead of hitting the starter button again and shearing gears.

I had hydro lock on the lawn tractor a month ago and fortunately no damage... but I did have to drain the oil and change that out... it was diluted and full of fuel.  I also installed a fuel shut off just in case.

Turning off the petcock is not always going to prevent hydro lock. I have had petcocks fail and in the off position still flow fuel, just a warning.

Amen to that.  I was changing the air filter on my now sold '98 and removed the tank which had a little fuel left in it.  After a few minutes, I noticed that gas was dripping from the petcock and figured that I had not completely closed it.  After fooling with it a few minutes, it still dripped.  Immediately ordered a Pingel manual valve.  Also, replaced the valve on my '97 as well.

I would bet you have trash in your tank that has gotten into at least 2 carbs, preventing the float valves from seating.

Thanks for all the input, all good stuff. I'm on the road right now, so signal is spotty. Yes, I've been dealing with a low speed sputtered and have been treating it with moderate doses of seafoam hoping that will cure it. Today I increased to  a more aggressive amount. In the meantime I'm doing what I can to avoid another incident, by shutting down the fuel peacock and running down the carb bowls a bit to help with maybe stuck floats or gummed up  low needles, till I can do a proper fix. But of more concern now is the new coolant drip that started off the waterpump housing. Other than that she's running like a valk , all heart. Aloha

I had the same problem while "on the road" and each morning I pulled the three screws out of the center cover on the front cover and turned the engine over by hand to assure there was no fuel in the cylinders.  This only takes a few minutes each day and gives you confidense when you hit the starter button.  It will get you home where you can do proper fix.

Easy way is to put her in 2nd or third key off  and roll her a little let the clutch out if she turns over a little good to go if not check  further.

Shininghorse,  I couldn't help but notice your "Aloha".  I lived in Hawaii (Honolulu) for 30 years. If you are from there drop me a note at justmeedp@cox.net, would like to exchange a couple of questions etc.
