Am tracking a ticking/light knocking noise.  Sounds like about half of engine speed.  Left side of bike, only audible from riders position. Can't hear it when down crawling next to her. Even with a piece of hose. I'd like to give the tensioners a spin on their own to rule them out. Can i just back them off and then reinstall them with no ill effects, or is there a procedure to this?

Yes you can back them off and reset them with no problem. The book has a tension adjustment. Be sure the crank pulley mark is set to T-1 mark and the cam gears show the arrow in the up position. Then remove the tensioners for your test. Reinstall with enough tension. The long span of the belt should have .2-.3 inch of movement.

These do tend to get noisy when rubber builds up on them.. They are easy to clean and re-install.. Like mentioned, do not let the belts jump a tooth.. These engines stretch a lot when warm and I like to set the belts a little looser [3/8"] and they run quieter..

The tensioner springs are what you need to use to set the tension on the belts.

A little loose is going to be acceptable but too tight and you will burn the tensioners up.

Turn the motor to allow all of the slack to be on the tensioner side and let the spring push the roller against the belt.

Tighten the bolt and you will have it correct.

If you add a little extra finger pressure to the roller you are defeating the purpose of the spring and supplanting Honda's engineering expertise with your own and you then have to accept the risk of such folly.

Ok, backed off the tensioners anr found them both to have some play in them. the bearings spin quiet, but you can "rock" the roller on the shaft a slight bit. Does this seem normal?

Yep, they do have a small amount of axial play in them. All normal.

this all sounds too easy .... is there anything that could go terribly wrong with adjusting the timing belt tensioners or for that matter installing new belts. Just asking.

Yup. ALOT! these are interference engines. Get it wrong, and the pistons and valves have a BIG argument over shared space......

I already know that. Just trying to be humorous. But specifically what are the pitfalls? How about more mundane items like is a new gasket required. And yea, I know about the bolts being a thousand different lengths. I'm thinking about installing Gate belts.

From poking at the tensioners. It doesn't seem all that complicated. I thiught there was something about belts in shoptalk. no gaskets there just the rubber seal for the timing cover.
