running engine without the tank on

I'm having electrical problems with my 98 Valk.  I need to be able to run the bike with the tank off so I can test circuits.  So I'm trying to figure out how to do that.  I'm seeing 2 options...

1.  Get more fuel line hose and have the tank sitting on a workbench next to me.  My question on that is I know how big the fuel line is.  What about the smaller tube that runs to the carb?  Does that also need to be extended?  Any idea what size that tube is?

2.  Rig up some kind of smaller temporary tank.  Someone recommended putting a couple lines from an old gas can.  If I do that, will it work without a petcock involved?  Or do I need to attach the petcock to the temp tank and run hoses from that?

The petcock is just an on/off valve for fuel flow.  You can run a temp tank without one.  If you use the Valk tank, you'll have to extend the fuel lines, either 5/16ths or 3/8ths will work.  As far as the vacuum line, you can apply a vacuum to the petcock with mityvac and pinch the line closed with a hemostat.  You'll have to put a cap on the cylinder 6 vacuum port.

If you run it with the tank on you bench then you will have to extend both the fuel line and vac to petcock line...I believe the smaller line is 5/32nd or close to it. If you use a different tank like your gas can you have to crimp the smaller vac line from the carb to fuel petcock. Also if you do the gas can idea make sure it is super clean as you will have removed then main fuel filter that is located in the original gas tank. I'm still fairly new myself but recently rebuilt my carbs and such and replaced most of those fuel and vac lines. Whatever you use becareful with the sparking from playing with electrical components and fuel.

I use a universal coolant tank that I picked up at autozone.  It's got outlets on 3 sides (I think) that you cut the end off of to use, I slid a brass insert inside the plastic so that when I hose clamped the fuel line to the outside it didn't crush it, and the tank has a couple of different 'mounting' tabs on it so that when I hang it from one side, the fuel flows, but when I hang it from the other, it doesn't.  You could also put an inline cut-off in - I have one just haven't installed it yet.

It's worked on several different bikes - haven't had to use it on the Valk though (keeping fingers crossed).

Maybe if we knew what the electrical problems are we could help with that and you may not need the remote tank..

That's what I do also.  I hang the tank from my garage door track and it is up and out of the way while I tinker with carbs and so forth.
Works great.

If you don't have anything around you can pick up a generic windshield reservoir bottle for $5.00 or so. Make sure the nipple is large enough.

I got this one from Auto Zone or some such place.
 
They're chemical resistant and you can hang it from anywhere above the carbs. Even the left grip area if you can keep it high enough.
