Thought there was a Federal minimum barrel length of around 16" or so?

There is... for a rifle... That's technically a handgun (Notice how dinky the butt stock is.)

I dunno. That's a rifle action so I don't see how re-stocking will make it a pistola  uglystupid2

Thought it was 18.25"  for legal rifle... could be shotgun though.

The action (Or the caliber for that matter) doesn't enter in to it. It has to do with how the receiver was filed on the transfer form, if the receiver was ever made into a "rifle" in the past (There's some REALLY funny things there.) and if it has a "buttstock". Or another way to put it, is if it is designed to be shoulder fired. While the mare's leg LOOKS like a rifle buttstock at first glance, take a closer look, and the buttstock really isn't long enough to shoulder fire (At least, not without some serious contortions of the shooting position.)

I won't claim to be an expert in NFA firearms, and what makes one a SBR or not (Short Barreled Rifle) but I did my homework on it a few years back when I built this toy (5.56, and it's a handgun, although built on an AR15 action)

You can have the exact same action as a rifle (the Mare's Leg is a model 1892 Winchester replica action, probably chambered in .45 Colt, and the beautiful AR-15 pistol worked up by Spoom in .223?). The key is that the manufacturer has designated the action as a "pistol" instead of a "rifle". Also, it can never have been a rifle. Taking a rifle action and making a pistol out of it is a guaranteed one-way trip to the Graybar Hotel for an extended stay.

In general, leave stuff like this to the pros. And, no, I don't mean those clowns on that TV show Sons of Guns.

A licensed manufacturer can use an action from a rifle if it is re-numbered and registered as pistol. The numbers must trace back to a BATF acknowledged 'manufacturer'.

Yeah I've been looking at building an AR out of RRA parts and they call that a "handgun" receiver. Not my cup-o tea but pretty neat. Correct me if I'm wrong but wouldn't putting a stock on that make it illegal? There's just no sense to some of these rules.

Eddie and I took a ride up to Maine just for the hell of yesterday and stopped into Cabelas (I'd never been). I was hoping to check out the Smith and Wesson AR that's chambered in the Russian 5.45mm (AK74 round) but it's not out yet. In fact I couldn't even find it on the S&W website.

Yes, putting a regular buttstock on my handgun AR15 would be a federal felony. And yes, it'd take about a minute to swap the lower from one of my regular AR15's on to it, and commit that federal felony. (And yes, I've never done this and never will!)

In fact, in my research when I put this together, if you own the pistol upper, but don't own a pistol lower, AND own a rifle lower, THAT is a federal felony. So if you own any AR15 rifles, don't buy the pistol upper and plan on getting the pistol lower later, get them together or get the lower first.

And yes, it's all utter rubbish as far as I'm concerned, but dem's the rules, so I follow them.

If you're wanting to build your own, here's where I get my uppers from (The complete kit section is basically everything you need except for the stripped lower receiver. That's the part that is the firearm under federal law, and the part that needs to be transferred by a FFL) - http://model1sales.com/

Sweet, they have the 5.45X39 chambering. Quality is good I assume?

Oh, I also happened to check out the Bushmaster AR with the CF lower receiver. $650 bucks with top rail and Red Dot sight included. It was tempting but it lacked to front A2 iron sight. Had it had that I might have pulled the trigger on one. But I don't want to have to rely on an optic. I actually like iron sights.

Rossi is making these mare's legs, too.  I am wanting one in .44 magnum.  .45 colt is nice, but i want to keep my calibers limited....

Also, for Glock there is a carbine kit.  To show the ridiculousness of the laws, if you put the buttstock on first, it's a felony.  You have to make sure you put the barrel on first, then the buttstock.
Talk about crazy!

here is the Rossi mare's leg.  I wanted one after seeing a similar weapon on the tv show "Firefly".

I've been perfectly happy with mine, although I know a few long range competition types who have quibbled over them, but if that's what you're after, you're gonna be willing to pay the big bucks involved for a long range rig too, IMHO...

And I know what ya' mean about the iron sights, but, if it's got rails, you can add iron sights back on ya' know...

http://model1sales.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=category.display&category_id=513

And I'd also been very tempted to put together a 5.45x39 carbine (As well as one in 7.62x39) but, well... Nearly 4 month old triplets kinda put a damper on fun money lately...

Good idea. But on the other hand there's a .357/38spl so you could shoot really cheap.

Serk, the yeah you could add a quad-rail up there but the sight that came on there was like a shaved down A2 sight. Looked weird. I'm looking at 5.45mm over 5.56/.223 mainly because you can buy assloads of Russian milsurp ammo nice and cheap. Though this makes chrome barrel, bolt and carrier a must from what I understand.
