trent resnor wrote it for JC. but it was more of a life long tribute done by NIN for JC than specifically for johnny. it was the story of his life... so for JC to do it was only fitting and NIN took no royalties from johnny doing it. it all went to his estate.

The music video was shot just before June died. I don't remember if it aired before she died or not. Johnny and June appear without makeup in the video to visually highlight the story. The House of Cash is a real place. It was a museum to Johnny Cash, but it closed due to poor ticket sales. When the music video director showed up to film Johnny playing and singing the song at home the House of Cash was an odd, closed spot that he couldn't pass up.

I didn't realize NIN didn't take royalties. That's great.

Not trying to be contrary, but it wasn't written for Johnny Cash. Trent wrote it very much about himself and the way he was feeling at the time.
