Reminds me of a number of years ago following my divorce. I had started attending a "Divorce Recovery" group that was part of a local church's outreach and was actually quite good. BUT...they were the huggingest (new word?) bunch I ever met and it really bugged me. Finally one evening when the moderator opened the floor for any subject of discussion, I stood up. I commented on my distaste for all the physical stuff, then stated I would be more than happy to shake anyone's hand...or both hands for that matter, in place of a hug. But when I shake them, they had best be in front of me. Even though they all booed me good naturedly, it worked. Can't stand that crap, especially when I knew some of those bimbos were only trying to cop a .....well, you get the idea.

Being raised Italian it is customary to hug and kiss all family members, this includes your uncles and cousins. When my father made the mistake of moving to northern Wisconsin were there are no Italians, and (to be quite frank) no acceptance of affection, it was hard for me to give up my traditions that had been instilled into my nature. When I met my then girl friends father (father-in-law to be) I shook his hand and gave him the customary hug and kiss on the cheek. He just about died thinking his daughter was dating a fag.
Oh well, you can’t fix stupid…..

I came from a hugging family and I still to this date give and get hugs, both sexes.
From the sounds of the post above, I must have been raised as an Italian instead of a German/English mix.

i think it's a whole "European" thing. when i visited my cousins in Italy years ago, my cousin and i were walking together down the street when out of the blue, he grabs my hand and held on, so here i was walking hand-n-hand with this guy!! it did make me feel uncomfortable, but to them, it's a sign of "i'm glad you're my friend" type of affection. nothing sexual about it at all. now, if he started touching my butt, then things would have had to stop!! |

I accept hugs from the ladies, he## at my age, they feel that I'm 'safe' I guess. I also notice that Vietnam vets do more of it. WWII and Korean vets, not so much. The treatment that Vietnam vets got when they came back, I can sure see why. However, one hug that I'll not turn down is one from Phyllis, Lyndel. She is the huggiest (sorry to steal your word John,  ) Like RJ, I came from a German family where hugging was and is done. |

Yeah, RJ & Wayne, I hear all that. As with many of us, life hadn't been too kind in the past and it affects how we react to others. At the time I was attending the Divorce Recovery meetings, I was fresh out of a 31 yr. union where my wife had taken up with a much younger man. As a result I really didn't want anything to do with women for a while, least of all a hug by some stranger. My biological makeup is mostly Italian, but I was adopted at age two by a German/English couple(long and difficult story). Although very loving, they weren't prone to such displays. Many years later I found some of my biological family and wouldn't you know it....hugs were back in my life. However, by then I was OK with it. |

Well I admire any race that's self confident and outward looking enough to demonstrate affection. There aren't many nationalities as cold and up tight as the English (and I am English by birth, if not inclination) and I really like travelling (States, Italy, France, middle east) because people everywhere else seem to have less of a hang up about being, I dunno, human? Over here we perceive Americans as being more outgoing, friendly and likely to demonstrate affection with a hug than us. We must be the most unhugingest country on earth. Except the Germans, obviously. (Only joking, but most I've know are rather on the formal side - at least at first). On the other hand, I'd be uncomfortable if I thought it was phony... all depends on context I suppose. Overall I think I'm with the Italians on this one though. :)Its a Good Thing. |
