while it may be no surprise that the town of lynchburg tennessee is broke they have come up with a way to solve that issue. one man on the opposite part of town decided that they should tax the jack daniels distillery 10 dollars for every barrel they fill. his reason is that they (the distillery) is making money off the town so they should give back and give a little more. i thought it was more like the town was making money off the distillery because of the revenue brought in by visitors to the whiskey maker. as it stands 60% of the cost of a bottle is some form of taxes. at what point is too much too much? and when is it ok in this country to make money and not have to apologize for it. after all isnt that what this country was built on, capitalism... this coluntry is definately on the wrong track with how it thinks

old tiger as usual you miss the point of everything. at what point is to many taxes too much. automatically you run the party line. how about the local government put their house of finance in order. other words stop paying out the wahzoo for union salaries and benifits. the unions are getting rich and powerful while getting the youth to blame everyone else for the woes of the country. ows is demonstrating against wall street and the banks, meanwhile the afl-cio is advertising on google to obtain donations on their behalf. also demacratically controlled states are donating supplies to the protesters. yet you claim the tea party protesters are the same as ows. how do you see that. the tea party never rioted in the streets or threatened violence or took a crap on a police car. they also dont want to over throw the government for socialism. are some of what they are saying acurate, yes. but lets not forget that obama hired timothy geitner who masterminded the bailouts of the banks and wall street. and he didnt know the tax codes as an explanation as to why he hadnt paid over 300 thousand dollars in back taxes. tell me another lie. how about this jobs bill the president is pushing and then blames the republicans for not passing it... how about blaming his own party for not passing it cause each time democrats dont vote for it. and when they broke the bill up they still couldnt bring themselves to vote for it, why you ask... cause each of those democrats are up for re-election and dont want to be tied to it when that time comes. lest they wont be re-elected... it is time to look at the facts. yes obama was handed a crappy economy. but he has only made it worse by spending more money than all previous presidents combined. since i know you wont believe that try looking it up yourself. you sit in your house and play the blame game on the republicans. yes it is both their faults. how about trying to figure out how to help instead of insulting.

So what do we get? Absolutely nothing that you didnt earn. The rich and the successful businesses despite being over taxed dont owe we a cent. Doesnt matter if Midas himself was real, no matter how much gold he aquired, he wouldnt owe we anything. Its time for everyone, including the 40%ters that dont and never have paid their share to give it up, and try earning a living for a change. Even Jesus said we will always have the poor when he was being anointed with the expensive oils before he was crucified. That was when the libs were bitching about the waste of the oil that could be helping the poor. The politicians will never be satisfied until they are controling every facet of your life. The welfare state is their way fo controling a very large chunk of the populace and to insure their vote stays bought.

Lynchburg and Moore county TN sounds desperate. We have a poor Tennessee county , 8% to 10% are below the poverty line. Like many towns across our nation, Lynchburg is cash strapped. No money to pay for basic social services and to make matters worse, the Republicans will not even enact a .05 of 1% tax increase on multimillionaires to put thousand of teachers, firemen and cops back to work. These towns are dying. So what do we get? The same old clap trap responses about Obama and Libs sucking government's tit. The Federal Govt has nothing to do with this, it all city and county initiatives. Are theses Liberals? This is Republican country thats 96% white. Should the distillery pay more taxes? They are showing record profits and most likely paying crap wages. They are not hurting. It amazes me to see one thread where people are blubbering over honoring OUR flag or some photo shopped pic of an eagle on a grave stone yet will vote down any extra revenue increase to keep our cities and towns alive. No doubt Stalin would have been proud to call you comrade.

I sure as hell don't remember all these taxes in place during the depression, or WW II.
Yeah, my parents were DIRT POOR, but mom and dad and myself when I got old enough, we worked from sunrise to sunset for a $1.00 a day. Back then a $1.00 went a long way.
You could buy a pickup or a car for under $800.00, and everyone was getting along and there wasn't any people setting on their ass doing nothing, IF they could possibly work. Mom was a waitress for less than a $1.00 a day, but her very few tips helped immensely.
I'll shut up before someone says I don't know what the f**k I'm talking about. Problem was, I was there, and I also earned $75.00 a month when I went in the Marine Corps. No work here, so I joined the service. A few of these lazy assed people ought to have to serve some time in the service, and not be allowed to whine they don't like it and get an early discharge, or assistance without a urine test, test positive, sorry you is off of it permanently.
We also need to take away the full paycheck of Politicians after they are voted pot of office. These jobs are not, and were not supposed to be a full-time job with all the medical benefits for nothing. With Medicare and my supplemental premiums, I spend over $1,000.00 a month on them. Yes, we need change, but not what Obama proposed. He is just a puppet for the head $$$$ man in Venezuela.

old tiger, how about a little personal responsability. earn your own way. that is the way the country was set up. after all it is not up to the federal government to take care of everyone. if you believe that then you would like the old soviet union. even they realized socialism does not work as is the rest of western europe. after all just watch the news. as far as the town they should downsize their government and maybe they wont have the problems they have. social programs were initiated and then were raided by the government thus bankrupting them. if you are not happy with your job get further education and better your financial standing. question, why does someone go into business??? to make money. they already pay their fair share of taxes. the problem is the local government spends too much of it. and the only one i might villianise is the lazy bums that get welfare when they could work.so old tiger, you believe that if you educate yourself and work your whole life to get to the position to make money the government should take more of it to pay for the lazy. i spoke not to long ago with a head hunter that looks for blue collar workers and they cant get enough people to hire. why, because the new generation wants to make top dollar, what they should be making ten years from then. they are spoiled and this government and president is pandering to them. that is despicable. every one should try living within their means ans stop relying on the gubment

With what 10% unemployment you really think they can't find someone to hire? Just an excuse to move jobs out of the country.....I'm hearing the same CRAP at work now....can't find people to hire....CRAP

Okay, I've been a member for awhile but never posted here. You guys are way too conservative for me. Great knowledge base for the most awesome motorcycle I've ever ridden though. Being from Moore County and the surrounding counties, I feel pretty qualified to weigh in here. Lynchburg is, and has been owned by Jim Beam for some time. They are pretty much the only employer in town. Them, the battery warehouse, and the Coop. Most people, as I when we lived there on Mechanic Street, right by the elementary school, work elsewhere. The main industry in Lynchburg is tourism, not Jack Daniels, believe it or not. Its most likely hurting because tourism in general is down. That being said, this whole thing is most likely B.S. Just like the ordinance to allow Jack Daniels to sell whiskey at the distillery was B.S. Everyone went crazy saying we could buy alcohol in Moore County, when in reality, it was still cheaper drive to Tullahoma to buy it. So please, let's leave my hometown out of your Obama, liberal bashing, ridiculous comments.

jdray, I googled "chevy volt china" in less than 10 seconds. Guess what I found? And how much of GM does the government own? And how much do we, as Americans, owe China because they supply so much of the manufactured goods we keep buying. I think GM employees better start brushing up on their Chinese.

Hey Pots, We must have different google I Googled Chevy Volt China and found basically the same thing as Chevy Volt. It is built in Michigan. They are studying building some in China to take advantage of a subsidy. It says nothing of moving production there. Other than the right wing hyperbole.
We own 33% of GM at this time. Down from 61% at the time of the bailout.
I agree, we have to do something about the Chinese trade deficit. Hyperbole and scare tactics ain't it though.

Read a book when I was about 18, " Atlas Shrugged" by Ayn Rand. That would be a bought 40 years ago. Describes a situation in the states where those who produce the most, are the smartest and best at organizing companies and getting things done are no longer being rewarded for the effort. Inventions and things they build are being taken from them and given to the general population based on need. These successful people who are creating the jobs for everyone else are being treated as if they are greedy because they want a just reward for the effort and ability. Bottom line in the book anyway is that they are all talked into quitting, in order that the entire system fail and the thinking of society gets reset to something where " if you didn't earn it, it isn't yours ". That idea has stayed with me all my working life. If a farmer works a field, plants a crop, cares for it and harvests it, I think it's just wrong to see a bunch of folks lined up with hands out expecting a share, just because he has so much and they have so little because all they did was stand there and watch him do it.

It'll NEVER be enough because their are too many folks living off of the government, too much gov't spending with nobody responsible for the overspending, and too many bleeding heart liberals who think this is all OK.
+1. Unfortunately, you could not be more right. There is no way to fix it, unless you take away from some what they were promised, or grow a set of big ones and change what new workers are entitled to. Either way, it's going to P.O. a lot of folks, and create a lot of unrest.

Slow down big d, you're getting a little incoherent. Your thread is about a town whose tax base has eroded due to the economy and the inability of Washington to do anything about it. I get the drift of your thread is that poor Jack Daniels is getting taxed once again by some lazy socialist liberals looking for a free ride. Am I right?
I see it as a desperate attempt of a town whose bottom is about to fall out beneath it looking for some revenue to stay afloat.
Where we part ways is that you side with Big Business (Jack Daniels) who is making record profits. and vilifying the the ones in need, and looking for help.
It's estimated that Corporate America is sitting on 3 trillion dollars. You see statistics where it's shown that 1 percent control 46 percent of the wealth, and you're crying for them?
I find it abhorrent of this Kiss Up, Kick Down mentality in so many Americans today.
You really don't get it, do you? Your middle name really should be Marx.

I remember during the presidential campaign I saw a black woman at one of Obama's campaign stops saying "if Obama gets in office I wont have to worry about paying my bills again". That is the mentality of of a good majority of the people that voted for him. Thinking that the government is just going to take care of them and that they are entitled to it.. BULL. Get off your ass and work for it like the rest of us........
Exactly and now since they didnt get all the free stuff they were "promised" they are protesting (the occupy wall street crowd) so because they still have bills that arent getting paid for free its the rich peoples fault and wall streets fault because they allow the rich to thrive. Why not shut up, get a job and make it somehow like the rest of us
