As a retired trucker i have a problem with this situation that has been rammed down our throats.  tickedoff I've been at/on the border many times. coolsmiley I WOULD NOT trust their trucks around the block much less ANY miles into our country. Undecided Of course they did not ask for any input from me or any other trucker that has knowledge of the Mexican trucking ops. Roll Eyes This situation will cause problems on our highways and byways here in the U S of A. Angry I hope no i don't hope i'm wrong. Lips Sealed I stand by what i said-big problems from this. uglystupid2 I just hope and pray no one is injured or killed before they realize they effed up bigtime. I'm not pro union but I don't agree with this move either.

What does this have to do with the Mexican trucking ???   We have airlines from quite a few countries flying in our skies now....

A quick read in the article below indicate that this failed once before, and there are only a few small trucking companies certified now.....  I do not believe this will last long this time (let's hope so).

U.S.-Mexico trucking pilot program begins Oct. 21
Share | Print Comment

Tire Business staff report

WASHINGTON (Oct. 20, 2011) — A pilot program allowing cross-border trucking between the U.S. and Mexico begins tomorrow, despite protests from independent truckers, members of Congress, the Teamsters Union and others that the program will cost jobs and create major highway safety problems in the U.S.

Part of an agreement on tariffs and trade reached last March between President Barack Obama and Mexican President Felipe Calderon, the program allows U.S. and Mexican truckers to operate across each other’s borders for up to three years.

The program is an official implementation of the trucking portion of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), according to the website of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), which oversees the pilot program in the U.S. During the program, the FMCSA will monitor the ability of Mexican trucks to operate safely on U.S. roads.

So far two small Mexico-based motor carriers have been certified for the program. They are Transportes Olympic of Monterrey, with two vehicles, and Grupo Behr de Baja California S.A. de C.V. of Tijuana, with five vehicles.

However, the FMCSA is withholding Grupo Behr’s permit while reviewing objections raised by the Teamsters and others regarding Grupo Behr’s safety record. The Teamsters also question Transportes Olympic’s record on safety.

“Opening the border to unsafe Mexican trucks isn’t in America’s interest,” said Teamsters General President James Hoffa at an Oct. 19 news conference at a U.S.-Mexico border crossing at Otay Mesa, Calif. Joining Mr. Hoffa at the protest were Rep. Bob Filner, D-Calif.; Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif.; and Todd Spencer, executive vice president of the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association.

A previous pilot program ended in failure, Mr. Hoffa said, and he predicted this one will, too.

“Not only are Mexican trucks unable to meet U.S. safety standards, but there’s a drug war going on in Mexico,” he said. “The U.S. State Department has issued travel advisories for Mexico. This is not a reciprocal agreement. No U.S. drivers would dare venture into Mexico.”

I agree sort of.

Will the Mexican trucks be able to be stopped and safety inspected on the fly as are American (and Canadian trucks driving in the US)?

If so, I am not against it.

If their trucks are treated like the illegal immigrants (no laws need apply), then I am against it.

I'm not pro union, and I'm not for this at all.
I load trucks in Tucson and they ask on a regular basis if its OK to drive I8/I10 to San Diego at night. It is BTW. The 7 trucks that are in the pilot program are a joke. 7 TRUCKS,,,,,REALLY!!!!
Dja ever go to sunny Mehico and see the trucks and busses? I realize the busses arent pat of the deal but the maintenance runs a parallel.
And here in the modren world, maybe pullin em over and havin a look, could be raaaaciiiiist.

I fly AeroMexico all the time. I have never had a problem. Nice folks, and they provide great service. Food and drinks on their flights are free, so is checked baggage.

Good for you. Personally, I've observed their maintenance practices and personnel and I would prefer not to fly on aircraft maintained in Mexico.

In CA their rigs have to get past the CHP inspection terminals. The commercial cops go over'em with a fine tooth comb. If "they" don't make the cut that's where they sit until fixed.

In Britain, heavy foreign trucks have gone from being a rarity on our roads to probably over 1 in 3 in the last 20 years.
Our roads are heavily policed and regulated, so the effect has been to slowly raise the standards of the foreign trucks and their drivers, it was no use them being cheap if they were impounded.
The worst bit is that a large proportion of the containers are full of crap that we don't need, marked "Made in China".

So Mexico will start exporting their citizens to the US by the truck load on public roads now. Are they going to fill in all the tunnels?

I'd be happy with "only U.S. Truckers". The union part is optional.

sure the repubs are trying to destroy the schools, what?

sorry for the hijack, schools are liberal domains and have not worried about educating so much as making everything fair and giving out 'participation awards' for decades.

back on track now.....  in order to operate a commercial vehicle in the U.S. you have to read, write and SPEAK english fluently. according to the FMCSA, federal law. they stopped a guy a few years back in Indianna that couldn't speak a word of english, before you claim racism, he was a white guy who only spoke russian.

Ironic you should bring that up... Three months after I bought my Valk (Brand new, so it's been 10+ years since this happened) I got rear ended by a semi on the freeway... And the driver was from Estonia, had only been in the US a few months, and spoke almost no English...

(Side story - I'd always been told you wanna be the first to tell the cop your side of the story, so I approached him, told him what had happened, and explained to the cop that the driver of the truck was from Estonia, spoke almost no English, seemed to be Russian (I later learned it was Estonian). Cop said "Okay, I can handle this", walked up to the driver with a loud "Hola! Coma estas?" I just had to hang my head... (Sorry RJ, but it's a true story... Wink ) )

I am also not pro union. But I have a problem with this. I read in the paper today that the Mexican government put Tariffs on US made products bound for Mexico unless this was allowed.  I say good. We can put tariffs on there crap. Than maybe someone  will wake up and bring our production back to the US.

As a GM tech I see all the time parts that were made in Mexico. As well as China,Taiwan,Vietnam oh and Slovenia.. It is very rare to see Made in the USA on GM parts. Oh and how about this. A part that I replaced yesterday was "Made in Canada with Imported parts". HMM makes you think huh...

Of course there will be no cocaine , marijane a awana, meth, or heroine on board any of these trucks hauling appliances.

Spare tires for the truck  and trailer and sleeper to hide mucho dinero of drug proffits.

No way a terrorist could get one of these trucks and drive into a school full of kids.

This is wrong on so many levels it is not for this forum.

Union Jobs lost is a bad thing but all the other things are what worry me.

This has been on the back burner for a long time.

Obama needs the Mexican AMerican vote so here we go,,I thought this administration was for the Union Brother, NOT.

I get truckers that call for directions all the time. Most of them can't speak or understand English good enough to make deliveries. Some times I just hang up on them. You are a truck driver, and you want me to tell YOU where you are?

If you read further you will notice that the EPA will actually fix trucks not up to standard even emission related offenses. tickedoff I dont like the fact that the Mexicans when not allowed in, imposed a tariff of all goods coming into Mexico either. I wonder how many are going to use the trucks to get into the US illegally and what provisions they make for foreign drivers or for insurance? While I am not happy with this and it was started under Bush I see Obama being the spear head to get things going on this just like health care he got pushed through. If you really start to look and piece together all thats happening you see that while this may not be good its part of a bigger picture to take away the US as we knew it. If we allow this to continue then we are all to blame for loosing what we currently enjoy. I dont necessarily think the Wall Street protests are that productive but they may make some start to ask questions and start to take a stand against the gross mismanagement and steering America to destruction. This is not about liking or disliking unions this is about the powers that be wanting the US to integrate into one country with the loss of US sovereignty
