It's after 7pm now and not a word from my fellow patiots about the wonderful news from our Commader in Chief. After 8 long years, approx 5000 KIA's and countless wounded, and 800 billion dollars waisted on an unnecessary war, it's been annouced that our troops will be home by the end of the year.
Three cheers for our military and our President.

He closed Guantanamo too didn't he?

Whether we should have gone into Iraq or not isn't relevant. We are there.

Simple fact is that the US forces there ARE the stability of that region.

Telling the bad guys that we are going to pick up our toys and leave the playground at the end of the year is asinine.

Just hope we don't find ourselves back there in a couple of years trying to get a handle on an even exponentially worse mess in the region. Cause it ain't gonna be just Iraq, I'd look for multiple countries coming to play there after we leave. The benevolent countries of Iran, Turkey, and Syria come to mind. Nothing to stop them.

There will be a hue and cry about the humanity of it all and the US forces will have to slog back into the region, retaking areas that we once held at spectacular costs that will eclipse the costs of the previous years.

Sure, I'd like to see the troops out of Iraq. I'd like to see Iran and Syria actually become benevolent countries too. But right now, the US forces are the pin in the Middle East grenade and will be for quite some time.

Good post, I agree with much of your post. When boots first hit the ground in Iraq at the beginning, it was the best thing Iran could have wished for. I will be looking at how many "contractors" remain after the military departs. On the bright side, I understand that an American can do no worng in Libya right now. That's good news.

That will change sooner that you think...the middle east is going to be in termoil by the end of 2012.

I hope not.

Actually no, he didn't.

Oh it's absolutely relevant. It's that attitude that sees us getting involved where we shouldn't time and time again. Examine your missteps and learn from them. You can't just say "aw shucks" when you &#@% up like that. Or rather, I guess you can...

So what would you do? Stay there forever? You know that colonialism and being the world's police force is not a conservative value, right?

Yes!   cooldude This President has had more foreign policy successes than any other President in the past 30 years.  That's because in that department, he doesn't have to deal with those do nothing POS repubs in congress and the senate.  Too bad he can't have the same success when it comes to fixing the economy.  Oh well,  we will have to wait for his second term where the repukes will be in the minority.  Grin

I'm glad we're almost out. The whole cursed sandbox isn't worth the boots of one American soldier in my opinion. If war was necessary then we should stayed in the air and nuked em.

Of course, there's probably a good reason I'm not the president.  Undecided

The Guantanomo reference was meant sarcastically.

As to what we are doing and should be doing in Iraq, whether we should have gone in there or not is irrelevant. We are there.  If we both fall out of an airplane, the best course  of action while we are falling out of the sky is to get the chute opened, not debate on who pushed who out of the plane. That can be argued later.
The point was the focus on the present and future.

Do we stay there forever? We are still in Germany and Japan from WWII and Korea and all over the globe. We've made commitments to good people over there in the Middle East. Commitments to support paths to democracy and freedom. Its been ugly, messy and corrupt as well, but to abandon the effort and those people who have stepped up to desperately try and make their country a better place in the face of brutal opposition and a violent culture must be a liberal value. Cause it ain't mine.

You want to pull it and toss it and walk away.

Unfortunately, the United States is the World's go to guy when the crap hits the fan..

We don't get to walk away.

That's the problem.
