Haven't golfed in about 10years or so. Sad  When I changed work places, I had no one to golf with, and I really don't care to golf alone. I do enjoy reading a good book. The problem there is that I keep waking up and having to read the same page over and over. 2funny

A hobby is a regular activity or interest that is undertaken for pleasure, typically done during one's leisure time.

Provided you are not drinking at work, I'd say it qualifies, Mark.

Although I've tapered off somewhat over the last 5 years, I still consider myself an avid golfer.  At my peak, I actually carded a 9 handicap.  Now, I'm closer to an 18.  Still enjoy it; shot a round this past Friday.

I also design and build custom furniture (dining room sets, bedroom sets, entertainment centers, and a lot of custom built-ins).  I've actually built most of the furniture in our home.  Virtually all of the pieces are solid oak or cherry.   Here's some examples:

I've often thought about incorporating some custom woodworking into our Interstate.  Maybe someday....

I play disc golf every weekend (weather permitting), play bass in a band, and build/repair computers.

Built this system back around 04.  Still running strong.

Helped my son build this "Christmas present" last year.  Much faster than the last one.

According to the spousal unit, I don't have any hobbies, just obsessions...

I collect, build and shoot firearms, any kind I can get my hands on, modern, antique, WWII, etc. I also reload ammunition, partially for fun, but mainly for cost savings (And so I can make the EXACT loads I want.)

I'm into computers, and have a rather elaborate home network (About 20 computers online, if you count the virtual ones, and there's a Linux server VM that controls the aquarium, below)

I'm into saltwater reef aquariums in a big way. I've got an 8 foot long, 300 gallon saltwater full reef aquarium (All corals are real, and I grew them from tiny 1" frags myself)

I'm almost ashamed to admit this, but I spend WAY too much time playing World of Warcraft.

Oh yeah, and last, but definitely not least, father of 4 (Including the 4 month old triplets trying out their first Halloween costumes):

I enjoy ham radio in my spare time.  I have always enjoyed radio, and now, I have a room full of it that I have collected over the years, I also have various versions in my vehicles, I can talk world wide pretty much anytime; usually, I just listen though.

As I am typing this, I am listening to some friends of mine, one near Natchez, MS, one in Salida, CO, another out near Hamlin, TX and a few people I don't know, but hear pretty regular.   Its a great hobby still, though many consider it oudated.   My equipment has capabilities to do the equivalent of VOIp to other areas in the world and then retransmit so other mobiles can use my equpment and the station or stations I am connected to.  As I said, its a great hobby!!

Things have been added to and relocated a bit since this was taken.  My wife says I need to add on to the shelves again...

see ya,

You may be interested in a podcast.  http://twit.tv/hn  Leo Leporte (from ZDTV, TechTV, and now his own network TWiT (This Week in Tech) has built a new studio with an operational HAM museum.  People can walk in off the street and broadcast.  If you're ever in the Petaluma, CA area you'll never meet a nicer guy.

I don't seem to have time for a hobby other than riding the Valkyrie. Since my wife died I spend lots of time with my grandkids, four 6 year olds and a 2 year old. Makes this old man very happy but they wear me out.

Interesting observation by your spouse, Brian.  I think it actually applies to many of us.  When I get the inspiration for a project, it actually consumes me.

Next time we meet, I'm really interested in finding out more about the salt water reef aquarium.  Might become a new obsession.

Would be my pleasure, but the wife has a nugget of wisdom on that topic too... She'll warn people, getting me to talk about my obsessions is easy... The tricky bit is to get me to shut up about 'em! Wink

NCGhostrider, you and I share the Ham hobby.  K5JTJ is my call.  I like the Kenwoods and the Drakes you have there.  I have buddies that have all of those.  One of them, AB5GU Marty, collects old Swans.  He has hundreds and most of them are on shelves in his shack and can come online easily.

For me, I have a simple shack with an HF, 2m all mode, and Yaesu 857 in the mobile.  I also have a DStar server that you mentioned in my living room that I built and configured.  We have never connected it to the internet and the repeater at the same time because of the City's network admin and their policies.

I went from gaming (Quake) to ham radio, and now to riding ('99 Valk IS and '07 Wing).  Now that our son is in college, I have time to ride!

Oh, yea, I can verify Brian's "obsession" on the salt water system he has devised!

Hayhauler...  I do love my old Kenwoods and Drakes.   I have added a Kenwood or two since the pic was taken and even went to an autotuner for low power work.   I have always pictured multipiece, large radios from when I saw them in magazines as a kid.  I guess that image is stuck there, though I do have modern multifunction radios also.

For those that care, the Drake radios mentioned were made in Miamisburg, Ohio, they are high quality, and though from the 60's and 70's still hold there own as far as sound, ability to find signals and eliminate unwanted interference.

I have a good friend in town that also has a very large saltwater tank, about 8 ft by 3ft.  We built the first one, watched the glue come undone one night on a cross brace (watch the glass bend!) and went to panic mode during the transfer to a rubbermaid stock tank.  The second aquarium was bought and has been really neat to watch as things stabilize and mature!!!

I know this has been posted in the humor thread on the general board, but how can you pass up posting it again with this photo?

As a bagpiper, I play many gigs. Recently I was asked by a funeral director to play at a grave-side service for a homeless man. He had no family or friends, so the service was to be at a pauper's cemetery in the Kentucky back-country.  As I was not familiar with the backwoods, I got lost; and being a typical man I didn't stop for directions. I finally arrived an hour late and saw the funeral guy had evidently gone and the hearse was nowhere in sight. There were only the diggers and crew left and they were eating lunch. I felt badly and apologized to the men for being late. I went to the side of the grave and looked down and the vault lid was already in place. I didn't know what else to do, so I started to play.  The workers put down their lunches and began to gather around.  I played out my heart and soul for this man with no family and friends.
I played like I've never played before for this homeless man.   And as I played "Amazing Grace,'" the workers began to weep.  They wept, I wept, we all wept together.  When I finished I packed up my bagpipes and started for my car. Though my head hung low, my heart was full.   As I was opening the door to my car, I heard one of the workers say, "Sweet Mother of Jesus, I never seen nothin' like that before and I've been putting in septic tanks for over twenty years."

Thinking about something like that someday. I'm a licensed private pilot, but have been priced out of the flying gig. Around here a Cessna 172 rents for around $140/hr now (often plus a fuel surcharge).
