Made a run for the mountains to seek out any remaining colors. Since it was coming up on the lunch hour, I threw together a bagged lunch and made a run for some scenery.

I grabbed a long sleeved “t” for the ride since it can get nippy in spots along Hwy 4. It turned out to be a bit overkill as it broke into the low 60’s.

I pulled off at the San Diego Canyon Overlook, which I generally cruise right on by, and broke out the lunch fixins.

What a great afternoon. Nice view from my spot, met up with some nice folks passing through.

Kinda nice looking out among the tree tops.

Water level definitely lower than usual.

So, instead of making it just a lunch run and heading home, I continued further southeast bound along 4 since it was a beautiful day and I'd been staring down at it for the past hour or so.

Little to no traffic I could ride at my own pace.

I came to the cut off at La Cueva, Hwy 126. I’ve eaten at the Ridgeback Café located at the junction of Hwy 4 & 126 many times in the past but have never actually made it to Fenton Lake. By the way, the Ridgeback Cafe does make for a good place to stop for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

I was previously called on not including bike pic's so here's another.

Some neat rock formation through here.

Seems like a nice area, minimal colors still showing, I’ll have to come back sometime with the fishing gear and relax.

I must admit, I feel a bit foolish, I didn't know these grew in the wild like this, I always got mine in the frozen food section...  Wink

Time to make the trek back.

Check out those faces...

Valle Grande

Remnants from the fire back in July...  Undecided

That's all folks, hope you enjoy the pic's.

Less than a hundred miles round trip.

One more great day ride before the cold moves in... Check  cooldude

NM 4 is always a great ride, you need to get down and see the lower part from the ranger station to NM 485 before all the leaves drop.

Is the "San Diego Canyon Overlook", the overlook just before the Jemez Falls turn off?

Hey Raymond, nice to hear from you. Hope all is good with you and yours.

We don't have any Taco Bell up in the immediate Jemez area so I had to make do with some of my home made cole slaw loaded with apple and jalepeño slices. Good stuff (pic available of course). I reminded myself several times to bring a fork... no such luck, the celery sticks came in handy.  cooldude

I believe it's just before if coming via San Ysidro. Coming from my side I think it's just after but I could be mistaken.  Roll Eyes

Thanks for the ride report and inspiring photo's.

This is the second great looking ride report from New Mexico I have seen in the past week.  Guess we'll just have to make a trip over there and do some of these rides next year.  What weekend of October is the best for the colors? Judging by you photo's I'm thinking maybe the last weekend in October? What is the elevation in those areas?

Very nice photos.  Winter showed up here on the Front Range tonight - - 10-15" of snow predicted.  Pulled the snowblower out of shed.  Angry   Cry

I'm defintely not the one to tell when the colors will be here. I live here and I've missed them myself by being either too early or too late. I believe it mostly depends on when the cold snap finally breaks in.
Elevation - here in Los Alamos I believe we're just under 8,000. I usually watch the Fall Color map guides and try to plan accordingly. I've seen it anywhere from mid September to late October.

We use to have the same challenge out in Oklahoma, trying to schedule a Talimena Drive cruise. A healthy drive to catch or miss what might be a great, colorful trip that you'll never forget. Always made for a great trip, the colors just didn't always cooperate though.

Glad you liked the pic's.
