When I put on the last tire I made sure the holes in the bottom of the pinion
cup were clear, and reassembled with just a tiny amount of grease in the pinion. When I
went to pull the drive shaft out of the final drive today, the seal was where it
was supposed to be, and the pinion end of the shaft appeared well coated in final
drive fluid...

Not sure thats gear oil on those splines. Havent had mine apart yet to see if you can get gear oil into the pinion from the pumpkin, but that looks like junked grease.

All looks good there.  I use brake cleaner to remove all the old grease.  For getting the old grease out of the rear end, I put either newspaper or cardboard on the floor to catch all the crap.  And wear safety glasses.  cooldude

You can definitely get gear oil into the pinion cup from the pumpkin.  With everything cleaned up, if you hold the pumpkin with the coupling down, you'll get a steady stream of gear oil running out.

Thanks for that info. When I did all my maintenance this spring I hadn't done enough reading to know about the pinion maintenance yet, so It didnt get done. Thats on the list before putting her up  for the winter though.

I took the wheel off Saturday afternoon and changed the tire and cleaned up the wheel and
balanced it.

Then on Sunday afternoon, I cleaned the shaft and the flange and stuff and re-shmooied them and
put the wheel back on.

I know others are a lot faster than me, but still... there's no way a motorcycle shop could do all this
stuff and charge a price that most people would find acceptable...

All this and I even have a better helper than the motorcycle shops do...   cooldude

Looks great!

Yesterday, I serviced the final drive on the IS that's going to Norway and everything looked like new in it also.  Even the three o-rings looked good.  (I replaced them anyway.)  It's a '99 with 24,3XX miles on it, and judging by the color of the final drive oil and the thread lock I encountered on various nuts and bolts, I'd bet it's the first time it's been serviced.
