I've been there. I am GLAD that the guard said what he did. As old and tired as i am i would have had something to say myself. My cousin and his wife(both were Army Majors)are buried at Arlington. Far as i'm concerned laughter is not merited at Arlington either. Thanks to the Old Guard and all who served.

Yes sometimes the young must be taught,, because of lack of home training.

Place of reverance and respect at all times.

I only wish such disrespect were a recent phenomenon... I distinctly remember going to the tomb of the unknowns to pay my respects as a child in the mid 1980's on a family trip, and some people in the audience couldn't shut their mouths even then, causing one of the guards (It was during changing of the guard as I recall) to stop and give a similar admonishment...

I'm not sure what the guard would have done had the loud mouths continued.  I would like to think someone there could have arrested them on disturbing the peace or something.  I'm guessing they would feel their right to free speach had been denied.

my daughter and i went and saw the changing of the guards this last summer.  i can not, for the life of me, understand how anyone could say a word during the ceramony.  i myself was in tears (not outright balling, but i was truely choked up)

if you ever go and watch, take a look at the pavement.  it's got a worn track in it.

Absolutely amazing place. The reverence there is overwhelming.
I think the laughing fool is a direct result of parental failure. No matter how old he is.

a few years ago i was at the Arizona memorial and a group of Japanese tourists were laughing ,talking and taking photographs with funny faces, etc. i went to the tour guides(all ex navy) and pointed it out. the offenders were whisked onto the transport boat and had to wait the 1/2 hour until the rest of us were ready to leave.   cooldude
