31 December 2000

The hoopla in 1999 drove me nuts. Media KNEW it was wrong but didn't care. Like DOH! Anyone who can count to ten should figure it out.

Thinking out loud:

0 > 1 is the first year
1 > 2 is the second year
2 > 3 is the third year
3 > 4 is the fourth year
4 > 5 is the fifth year
5 > 6 is the sixth year
6 > 7 is the seventh year
7 > 8 is the eigth year
8 > 9 is the ninth year
9 > 10 is the tenth year

Therefore, 31Dec09 is the last day of the tenth year, the last day of the decade.  Therefore 31Dec99 is the last day of the century.  The last day of the century would be 31Dec2000 if you counted the first day of the century as 01Jan01 instead of 01Jan00.

Don't really care as long as I'm still here. We did tease my dad in years past because of the headstone on his and mom's grave. It was a long one with her dates and name on one half, dad's on the other half. She had already passed away but dad was still with us. Therefore, the dates his side of the stone read 1906-19__, the last two digits were left open obviously since he was still here. As the end of the century neared, he would raze us about it, telling us kids it was going to cost us extra because the dates were going to have to be changed from 19__ to 20__. Of course, we gave it back to him, saying he did it purposely knowing full well he would live well into the next century....most of his family lived into their late 90's and beyond. At age 93 he caught the flu and was so sick he had to be admitted to the hospital. Even then he would tease about it, saying "look how much money I'm going to save you kids."  As Christmas passed in 1999, he took a turn for the worse and joined mom on Dec. 27, 1999...four days before the end of the month and year 2000. Now his headstone reads 1906-1999, but I would have gladly paid for it to have been corrected had he lived.

Touching story John.

My parents have also taken care of all issues related to their final passing, and a their executor I am very glad they have.  No decisions necessary for me or siblings.  Both 82 and still kicking (and driving to AZ for the Winter).

Concur with DarkMeister.  My "favorite" was the people who acted put out when someone corrected them.  Like the people who were right were the annoying ones, rather than the just-as-persistent but wrong people were.

I stand corrected.  i really didn't know there was no year zero.  There ARE numbers between 0 and 1, therefore I assumed that  the calendar started at zero.

(:  I like it.

G-Man:  Didn't mean to come across so strong.  No offense.  An honest mistake is expected.  Belligerency in error is not.  Well, I suppose it's EXPECTED, but...  you know what I mean.

Some of the confusion, no doubt, arises due to a difference in which we handle days and ages.  Official documents used to give the year as 1951st year or 1492nd year.  Thus the year from day 0 to 1 year after day zero would be the first year.  In that form we have no 0th year.

Ages we account for differently, rounding back to the years completed.  I give my age as sixty years, but I'm actually in my sixty-first year.  Babies in their first year (and sometimes after) are assigned ages by moonths, but only by the months completed.

As stated by others, the 20th century came to a close on 31 December, 2000, but we can still party like it's 1999.

I always found centuries a tad confusing. Like..."in 1850, during the 19th century".

The millenium hoopla - well, most people knew but didn't care. With that first digit changing from 1 to 2, that was significant enough for our lifetime. Waiting another year, to be correct, would have taken some fun out of it.

My mother passed at the tender age of 1,128 months (35,320 days). ???
In 8 days I'll be 746 months (22,380 days). I was born on the 9th year, on the last decade, on the first half of the 20th Century. Undecided

Every time I buy something for the Valk, the wife says that that I regress to the age of 60 months.  laugh
I just got a new bike, so I am now crawling all over the house sticking my fingers in the electrical sockets while wearing a wet diper! 2funny
