We woke up this morning to the sounds of silence. Took me a while, and then I realized what was missing was the sound of the generators running that had become a normal part of our lives!

So, after 5 days, our power is back! Woohoo!  cooldude cooldude cooldude  There are still about 500,000 in the state without.   Sad Obviously, there is a growing number of angry customers asking why it is taking so long. Bottom line is that the Utility company has cut back so much on expenses to improve the profits that they are no longer able to service their customers. Coming so close on the heels of Irene, and the extended power outages then, I predict that some "heads will roll". This whole thing is going National now. It will be interesting who or what the scapegoat will be.  Undecided

I hope this is the end now. Between Irene and this we have had eleven days without power since end of August. tickedoff

Yep, I agree!

It is outrageous that still today there are over 1/2 million customers without power. It will be a week tomorrow.

Reports are it's Connecticut that is taking the brunt.

My heart aches for these people. I can't imagine how difficult it really is with the cold and rain and all!

Perspective is everything.  Last winter, had an ice storm that took down miles of poles.  -10 deg, with wind.  They had to get D8 cats out, to push snow, just to get to the poles.  Some were without power for close to a month.  I was only out a week!  And, I have electric heat in my house.  Took over $100 worth of diesel in my tractor every day to keep the generator running.

Not NEAR the bit**ing that I hear from the east coast people.  What a bunch of weanies!

Perspective may determine attitudes.  Those using words like angry and outrageous likely have never spent any time with the electric power crews working day and night to get power restored after one of these events.  It's not magic and it doesn't happen without a lot of effort, but we have certainly learned to take much for granted.

Btw, Robin, congratulations!  It is a great feeling to have electricity back after going without for a time.   cooldude

My brother is supervisor for FPL in Florida (started out as "Lineman for the County") and I hear stories over and over about storm repair.  Sometimes problems with the company, but frequently just extensive damage, not enough crew and difficult working conditions.

Regardless of the above, I like my power on all the time and repaired immediately.

Carl,

I don't think there is anyone in CT that is upset with any of the men that are working on the crews, and that are working hard to get power restored. The anger is directed at the company that these men work for and who's greed is what is at the bottom of this fiasco. As a business owner I understand the need to make a profit, but when you do it at the expense of the customers you are supposed to service, it's another matter. Utilities are a monopoly, that we have no choice over if to deal with them, or go somewhere else. In exchange for this exclusive arrangement, there is a public trust, that has been violated.

Other states around here had the same problem as this state has had, but the utilities there did a much better job of planning when details of the impending storm became known. So, it's not the guys that are working through the night and the cold that are the focus of the unhappiness.

We have all become so used to the convienience of immediate power....  I know during the last hurricane here on the coast... we were without power for 15 days......  Everyone was working to get the grid up....
But... did ya notice how quiet, and dark it was???... it was also plenty dang HOT!!!!!   It's amazing how much power we use without even being aware of it.    At least in an ice, or snow storm.... yer cold stuff can be kept cold.....but I've never had to live in the cold.....Can't imagine!!!! I've decided that the stuff in the fridg and freezer can be thrown away... and save the cost of trying to save it... and be money ahead...rather than run the generator.... after a hurricane.... with the extra high prices of fuel... if you can get it, due to the power outages......
Sounds like a time ta cook all the food and have a get together!!!!!

Mark your right about the food it can be thrown out or eaten it's being without the water to take a shower, wash clothes, use a toilet, pay bills if you do it online it's a very electronic world we live in and some times ya just can't go without it.
I'll put the fuel in my generator to keep those little comforts and sleep in my own bed cooldude.
As someone stated above we are a bunch of WEENIES here because we were out for 7 days and he was out for 15 in 200 feet of snow and 300 below temps you can call me anything you want i like where i live and want my power PERIOD.................
