Being the son of immigrants,...this song represents the values and aspirations instilled by my parents.
I sure was a hardheaded SOB in my youth, but my eyes are being opened by each passing day.

I implore you to really listen, and then look out your front window and ask yourelf if we have excepted something less than the writers of our Constitution wanted to create.

Democracy means that we get involved in our own neghiborhoods, states, and Fedreal Government.
And that legal immigrants are what built this country because of the vision of the original Continental Congress.

Actually, legal AND illegal immigrants and their children built this country. Not to mention some of the people that were already here before anyone started crossing the ocean to rape and pillage. Oh, and some of the people brought in chains against their will. That bears mentioning too.

Anvil,

You are so right, I guess that the aboriginal peoples were slaughtered in the name of "nation building".
And we did bring people to these shores in chains and sold as chattle.

I can remember in the fifties and sixties the racial discrimination of Black Americans in the suburbs of Detroit.

It is time to stop the madness, and reach out to all Americans.

People coming from elsewhere to contribute is sort of what America's about. When you ask questions like; is this what the founding fathers envisioned? Well, probably not.

But I'm not sure they ever envisioned a world with seven billion people or a United States with three hundred million. Or space travel, or intercontinental travel within hours, or paved highways spanning the continent, or average lifespans of 60+ years...

But when the meter reads full, the meter reads full. We just can't take everyone. That's a cold, hard fact of life.
