I'm curious to know this as well. I suspect that it's very little but I've never tried and measured.

But why would you want to do that? Modern engines with good air filters allow very little in the way of particulates into the engine. Quality filters have plenty enough media to last the entire life cycle of the oil. Unless maybe you're having a problem with the filter itself...

I neglected to put the crush washer back on the drain plug once, and didn't loose
too much when I took the drain plug out, plugged the hole with my thumb, got
the washer back on the plug with one hand, and the put the plug back in.

Now I'm trying to imagine taking the oil filter off with the engine full of oil...

Blegg... what a mess I would make  Wink

before trying that I think I would slip a jack under the front of the motor and have the front wheel high off the ground.  That should minimize how much oil pours out

You will get some from the filter housing itself, but not a huge amount from the engine. The oil coming through that area is under pressure from the oil pump and is not the low spot like the drain plug. You might take Chris's suggestion and raise the front a bit, but don't think it will make a huge difference. Be sure to put a pan under it in any case and have the replacement ready to go back on. What really has me wondering is why?!

You might try to fill the new filter with some oil, suprising how much it will take before spilling out horizontally. It's time consuming but worth it to me to reduce the time to build up pressure to main bearings. The time involved before full oil pressure may be negligible but I like the idea of filling it some.  Aloha from APEC...Haven't seen one valk yet on Oahu.
