the manual says to change the oil b4 storing for the winter...I thought letting the oil sit in the bike for 5 months would be bad for the oil and new filter...definetly not paying for oil twice...some opinions please...TIA

u want an oil with a high TBN number. this will be a high quality diesel oil. TBN refers to the amount of anti-acid additives the oil has.

6 to 1, 1/2 dozen to the other.. Changing prior to storage will eliminate the acids but will expose it to condensation while its sitting..

I leave my used oil in all my vehicles during storage, BUT I take it out for a LONG drive (= VERY HOT) before I park it. Hot oil will burn off all the water/fuel/contaminents, which is what causes the acids in the oil.
I've stopped running it during the storeage time, to keep the battery charged, and now have it on a charger. That's how you get the water in the oil, a cold engine.
