One Week (2008) is a film that I stumbled upon a few weeks ago, but rediscovered today. Today it was for sale used in a video store so I picked it up.

One Week chronicles a motorcycle trip of Ben Tyler. Tyler is diagnosed with Cancer and follows the advice of  a Tim Horton's cup to head west. Against the wishes of his fiancee Tyler rides from Toronto to British Columbia trying to find himself on the road as he heads further and further from home.

Ben Tyler stops along the way at landmarks of "the World's Largest" tourist destinations as well as having a short visit with the Stanley Cup.

This film reminds me of the Canadian equivalent of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. Both works are focused on living life and the quality of life using the motorcycle as a means of transcendence.  Although, the jokes are better in One Week. The humor is akin to Stranger than Fiction.  Some of the jokes embody situation irony, while a few just pertain to being in nowhere on an old Norton.

One Week did not hit my radar as readily as World's Fastest Indian or countless other motorcycle riding films of the 200xs which is a shame given that One Week is a great film. If it is moving, poignant, or uplifting I will let you decide for yourself. I won't spoil the ending by trying to tell you how the movie impacted me overall. I recommend this film if you haven't checked it out.

Try reading Neal Perts books, of a Canadien Rock Drummer that uses a BMW GS to put his world back together after the death of his daughter and a painful divorce.

Or watch the documentaries by Ewan McGregor and Charlie Boorman, "Long Way Round" and "Long Way Down".
