Are the numbers on mc batteries code (such as on a tire) or strictly part numbers?

They are part numbers specific to the manufacturer.

The Yuasa part number breaks down and contains lots of info on how teh battery is configured - post location and style etc.  Here is a link if you want to figure out what their particular number means and then you can use this to get an equivalent from another manufacturer if so desired.

Battery spec and application PDF is the specific document.  There is some other info that may be interesting on this page as well......
