Beautiful east Tennessee ( GOD'S Country )

« on: November 25, 2011, 04:56:37 PM »

It was 33 on my back porch when I pulled the Valkyrie out of the garage this morning. Heavy wet fog also filled the air until we got near Huntsville, TN . First break " High Bridge " on Hwy.52 just outside of historic Rugby,TN and The Gateway To The Big South Fork .We had ( 4 ) Valkyrie's and Jack on his Kawasaki Concours.

A childhood friend who grew up just down the road but moved to Florida when he was 17 was in town visting his family for Thanksgiving . I told him yesterday he could go with us today and ride one of my bikes .He called early this morning and said he had thought it over knowing we was heading for the east Tennessee /Kentucky mountains and the voice in his head was claimin' it was'nt a good idea ( Thank You Lord ) cause I was hearing the same voice in my head.Took this shot near the Tennessee / Kentucky stateline we had to stop and do a wardrobe adjustment as the temps was climbing into the 60's.

Last week  our ride went into this same area more or less and we found the first Confederate soldier killed in Tennessee James M. Saufley. Saufley was killed by James Ferguson a union Yankee soldier and brother of the legendary Confederate partisan ranger and guerilla fighter Champ Ferguson. What we found today makes it appear that Ol' Champ was a bad ,bad man and killed folks on both sides during the war  Undecided

We could not have ordered a more beautiful day for Nov the 25th with cold temps this morning and warming up into the mid 60's this evening.

" The Money Shot " taken at the Clinton County Courthouse in Albany, Kentucky.

Looks like a great ride Joe... I found some good roads today, but was in a car... Buffalo Creek,
Cedar Creek and Old Fort roads near Lake Lure... probably more good roads around here, but
it looks like development is moving up past Lake Lure...

Joe, it was definitely a beautiful day in Tennessee.  I got out and rode to both the Jack Daniels distillery in Lynchburg and the George Dickel distillery in Tullahoma.  Did the tours at both, ate lunch at a sandwich shop on the Lynchburg square, and just rode.  Got right at a couple hundred miles in on backroads.  It was a good day!   cooldude

Thanks for your ride report and pics...wish y'all were closer so I could join in some of your day rides.

If you live in the 51st state that's like my dream ride Oregon and northern California up that entire coast. I will say after my dream ride I would return to The Great State Of Tennessee . If you ever do come to live or ride IMO east Tennessee where the mountains are is the best it's also home  Smiley

Yeah when I made the offer to him about riding my bike I really did'nt think he would jump on it like he did....I'm glad he thought it over and made the call not to go. To be honest the first motorcycle I ever rode was his ...A Harley 90 ....He's been in flat-land Florida 33 years and needs to be on his own bike before ridin' these curves we have in God's Country.

Champ Ferguson certainly killed a lot of people including innocent ones.  It was his claim that what started his blood-thirstyness were the brutal rapes and murders of his wife and daughter by union soldiers.

Ferguson's killings may have escalated with him becoming paranoid that orders were given that he  be shot on sight.  Ferguson figred it was better to kill everyone suspicious to him.

I really doubt Ferguson killed even a small fraction of innocent people as did William Tecumseh Sherman.  Sherman made a campaign out of killing and burning everything in his path.

While Champ Ferguson was hanged for his actions.  William T Sherman was rewarded and then made the first superintendent of Louisiana State University.

You know sometimes history decides whether you are a hero or a villian by which side wins the war.

History is written by the victor.

BTW Joe, I rode with Lee (Beekeeper) yesterday.  He said to tell ya'll hello.
