Before i start this got the idea from my brother "da prez". Tried this out today and i like it. 48 Deg F when i left today about 65 70% humidity. O-k take your EMPTY 1 and a half pound plastic bread sleeve/loaf wrapper and cut out the closed end. DO NOT put the plastic against yer skin. You have been warned. After you put on your long johns pull that plastic sleeve you have up over your knee and part way up your thigh. Take some tape of YOUR choice and put a LITTLE bit on each end of the plastic to hold it loosely in place. I really noticed a difference using this today. The old knees did not get as cold as they normally would have. In fact i could tell exactly where the plastic ended top and bottom. Bottom line-worked fer me and i like it. YOUR results may be different. I make ZERO guarantees. RIDE SAFE.

I remember a guy about 6 years ago, he had purchased a new to him bike, when I was taking a cold day ride I stopped at a McDonalds for a quick lunch and warm up. He had carpet padding wrapped around his legs. He said it was cheap warmth.
I could hardly stop from laughing.

I'm always looking for ways to extend my riding season-on a budget. These old bones will be 67 in Feburary. Ain't nowhere near as young i used to was. I put on a lot more clothing now than i did just 15 or 20 years ago for a given temperature. RIDE SAFE.

My riding buddy, Santa Chuck, who some have met, wears those lower leg leathers and seems very pleased with them.
I asked him about them and decided that for the little really cold weather we get in Texas I did not want to invest in those. YMMV

You haven't seen the size of my legs. I don't think Texas Toast wrappers would fit I'm not even sure a regular breadwrapper bag would fit my elbows It would fit my elbow now, but it ain't going to get past my ankles. My legs have always been big, ever since I played football.

I've used those rain-gators and they do work on cold days. But with my Baker Air Wings, I can deflect the engine heat to my knees on the Valk, and both will keep the legs toasty warm. On the Chevy Trike it is a different story. Ain't no heat inside dat big girl, it all blows around ya........... but not on ya or into the cab. That damn artificial knee metal will get real cold real quick......... Trust me.

And another thing(and truthfully i knew about this right after i signed up) the humor on this board. Just totally priceless. Good ideas good intentions mixed with the humor. Somebody said this before and more than once but it bears repeating-this board ROCKS. Thanks to all of ya'll. RIDE SAFE.

my mother was really cheap, i'm the youngest of four, so i got the most worn out winter boots possible! i use to put on a pair of socks, then a plastic bread bag, then another pair of socks! worked great! often times my outer sock would be soaking wet, but because of that plastic bag, my inner sock was dry keeping me warm.
i've been thinking of making a pair of cycle jeans that'll have some kinda wind deflecting plastic in the knees, i'm alright with leather, but sometimes too much is too much....

I have seen work jeans (Carhart style) with leather knee panels. I believe roofers wear them. You might want to try Duluth trading.

Yeah, do not be posting pics of men in pantyhose (or tights).... this is a family forum. It does work, though (playing high school football in old worn uniforms in MI winter). I have UnderArmor Coldgear drawers, and they are nothing but heavy duty microfleece lined pantyhose, and they are TIGHT (so go two sizes up). How about waterproof (mostly windproof) jeans? Dry-plus is just cheaper Goretex. http://www.cabelas.com/product/Bargain-Cave/Mens-Casual-Clothing/Pants-Jeans|/pc/105591780/c/105697980/sc/105699780/Cabelas-Dry-Plus174-Lined-Jeans/1089211.uts?destination=%2Fcatalog%2Fbrowse%2Fbargain-cave-mens-casual-clothing-pants-jeans%2F_%2FN-1102721%2FNs-CATEGORY_SEQ_105699780%3FWTz_l%3DSBC%253Bcat105591780%253Bcat105697980&WTz_l=SBC%3Bcat105591780%3Bcat105697980%3Bcat105699780 or http://www.cabelas.com/product/Bargain-Cave/Mens-Casual-Clothing/Pants-Jeans|/pc/105591780/c/105697980/sc/105699780/Carhartt174-Washed-Denim-Double-Front-Dungarees/733327.uts?destination=%2Fcatalog%2Fbrowse%2Fbargain-cave-mens-casual-clothing-pants-jeans%2F_%2FN-1102721%2FNs-CATEGORY_SEQ_105699780%3FWTz_l%3DSBC%253Bcat105591780%253Bcat105697980%26recordsPerPage%3D108&WTz_l=SBC%3Bcat105591780%3Bcat105697980%3Bcat105699780 or http://www.cabelas.com/product/Bargain-Cave/Mens-Casual-Clothing/Pants-Jeans|/pc/105591780/c/105697980/sc/105699780/RIGGS-WORKWEAR174-by-Wrangler174-Thinsulate8482-Pants/752350.uts?destination=%2Fcatalog%2Fbrowse%2Fbargain-cave-mens-casual-clothing-pants-jeans%2F_%2FN-1102721%2FNs-CATEGORY_SEQ_105699780%3FWTz_l%3DSBC%253Bcat105591780%253Bcat105697980%26recordsPerPage%3D108&WTz_l=SBC%3Bcat105591780%3Bcat105697980%3Bcat105699780 or http://www.cabelas.com/product/Bargain-Cave/Mens-Casual-Clothing/Bibs-Coveralls|/pc/105591780/c/105697980/sc/105710580/Carharttreg-Insulated-Sandstone-Bibs/727154.uts?destination=%2Fcatalog%2Fbrowse%2Fbargain-cave-mens-casual-clothing-bibs-coveralls%2F_%2FN-1102733%2FNs-CATEGORY_SEQ_105710580%3FWTz_l%3DSBC%253Bcat105591780%253Bcat105697980&WTz_l=SBC%3Bcat105591780%3Bcat105697980%3Bcat105710580 or http://www.cabelas.com/product/Bargain-Cave/Mens-Casual-Clothing/Bibs-Coveralls|/pc/105591780/c/105697980/sc/105710580/Cabelas-Roughneck-Insulated-Canvas-Bibs/751492.uts?destination=%2Fcatalog%2Fbrowse%2Fbargain-cave-mens-casual-clothing-bibs-coveralls%2F_%2FN-1102733%2FNs-CATEGORY_SEQ_105710580%3FWTz_l%3DSBC%253Bcat105591780%253Bcat105697980&WTz_l=SBC%3Bcat105591780%3Bcat105697980%3Bcat105710580 or http://www.cabelas.com/product/Clothing/Mens-Casual-Clothing/Mens-Jeans/Mens-Lined-Jeans|/pc/104797080/c/104746680/sc/104405580/i/104079780/Cabelas-Roughneck-Relaxed-Fit-Denim-Jeans-Fleece-Lined/722768.uts?destination=%2Fcatalog%2Fbrowse%2Fclothing-mens-casual-clothing-mens-jeans-mens-lined-jeans%2F_%2FN-1100857%2FNs-CATEGORY_SEQ_104079780%3FWTz_l%3DSBC%253Bcat104797080%253Bcat104746680%253Bcat104405580&WTz_l=SBC%3Bcat104797080%3Bcat104746680%3Bcat104405580%3Bcat104079780 I have the earlier version of these, and with a removable liner, they are waterproof and great (except in summer) http://www.motorcyclegear.com/street/pants/textile_pants/fieldsheer/mercury_2_textile_motorcycle_pants.htmlor http://www.motorcyclegear.com/street/pants/textile_pants/tour_master/venture_textile_motorcycle_overpants.htmlbut if you insist on panyhose, I like black (on my women, not you) http://www.amazon.com/American-Apparel-Opaque-Pantyhose-X-Small-black/dp/B003IFYJYC/ref=sr_1_14?ie=UTF8&qid=1322857992&sr=8-14EDIT: Sorry, you have to copy and past the long links into the url window

I did the pantyhose thing (remember Joe Namath did that too?)-did not work at all for me,still froze my a$$ off - but the "queen size" should fit anybody! and they come in colors to coordinate with your jacket! We often used jumbo trash bags for rain gear when on the job, that may be a good approach.

when its real cold out I will put the knee armor in the draggin jeans but usually just chaps over the jeans and I am happy,
that is good down to about 18 degrees and highway speed.
Maybe I should think about looking for where I put the fixed pieces of the baker air wings now that its almost winter... I am sure they are SOMEWHERE around here
Never thought about plastic, have used newspaper in my mesh jacket when I forgot my liner
wear the mesh all winter just like the breeze I guess

Saran wrap fits all sizes. I worked outside in N/E Illinois for many , many years and know most of the tricks. Beware of the panty hose being to tight, passing a forceful gas could blow your riding boots off.

I use to use knee high panty hose, queen size, on my left arm to cover up my tattoos for work. Stopped wearing it cause I was discriminated against for the ink. Respritory guy would always ask me where my arm panty was. It definitly was warm tho. My HD bud that rides year round wheres silk long johns. I just use chaps.

What's with this panty hose thing? Why not just wear long underwear? There is no panty hose on the planet that is warmer than my two layer Duofold with merino wool on the outside layer and Thermax polyester on the inside layer.

Correct.
However, pantyhose are warmer than someone's old droopy, washed-out, cotton waffle drawers.

A few times I can remember stopping for gas and buying a paper so I could slide a section down the front of each pant leg. Works great!

I don't have the photo of Smokin Joes custom shopping bag boot wrappers but the image is burnt into my brain.
Here ya go PAul ... our man Joe ... the toast of Clinton, TN and slave to fashion! That is a great picture of Joe Thom! (If you ignore the 'boots')
