Trying something different (for me)

Maybe someone has tried these and has feedback......seemed like a conveniant idea.  I was at the Honda Dealership checking on my tires that have been on order forever (price is good enough to wait) and I saw these:



They replace your valve stem caps and they do press on the shrader valve thinggy and release pressure into themselves and then show a color coded sleeve based on how much pressure they "feel". 

Ok so the worst that can happen is they explode and you loose all the air in that tire.  I have a compresser on board so I could recover from that, and I have lost a stem on both front and rear and survived that pretty easily so Im to too worried about safety.

The good thing is you can just look at them an know you have enought air.

They show green when its at the rated amount (I bought a 44 for the rear and a 40 for the front) It goes yellow when a small percentage is lost and red when an unsafe percentage is lost

Somewhere I read about those gadgets losing air, maybe not yours.  Also, if they weigh much will they put more centrifugal pressure on the valve stem keeper?

I'll stick to a tire guage.  Just my .02 and not worth much.

I tried them but discovered that they would allow a good 3-4 lb loss before they turned to yellow.

Lately I've become much more "anal" about tire pressure than that.

If they are more than a pound off, I correct it.


Not a safety issue, I'm just tired of my tires wearing out so quickly.

My kids bought me a set one year for Christmas.    I still have one on the front Chevy Trike tire, I don't trust it however.   The ones on MGM are currently taking up space in my tool box.

IMHO, which is worthless, I'd say your $$$$$$.

Keep us posted on these, where you got em and how well they work out for you.  I have heard from some that they do let air out of the tires and are not really that accurate.  Have you compared their accuracy with a known good gauge?

The only accuracy check I did was to fill the tire up to 44lbs with a good guage and then install the thinggy and it showed green.  I plan on letting it go for a week and then checking the pressure if its still green to see if its still reading 44 on my guage.  I used the 44 in the rear because as long as its 40-42 or so Im happy so by going up to 44 it gives me some wiggle room.  The front one is 40lbs.  Ill be watching that one too

I found some like that at wally world and put them on my bike and my neighbors...Have had them on for about 10K and have had no problems at all...nice to be able to squeeze, check color and boogie..

Don't run 'em on the factory Valk/wing stems. They can't take it.

Well its been more than a couple weeks now since Ive checked the actual air pressure.  Since installing these indicators, I just have been checking them.  

I checked both tires today (both indicaters were green) 44 rear and 40 front.

The front was within a pound of 40psi and so I thought well maybe this is a good deal.  Then I went to the back.  It was a hair above 40psi and the buggar was reading green.  Im gonna change the rear to the other one (came two in a pack) and see if that one will go to yellow before it hits 40psi.

Bottom line, I dont recommend these (I got these at the Honda dealer, but I didnt save the packaging to know the brand).

After reading your post I did a quick search online and found this http://www.doranmfg.com/motorcycle-tire-pressure-monitoring-systems.htm. I thought it looked interesting but I have no idea of the cost or if it would work with the Valkyrie. I check my tire pressure before each ride and something like this with a direct readout would be outstanding!

These were pushed by the Acura dealer when I bought my car.  Had two of them let all the air out of the tires over a weekend.  The gaskets seem to be very vulnerable to damage and it's apparently easy to do so.  Tried another set and they failed as well.

So I definitely DO NOT recommend these.  Good idea - bad execution.

Yeah, yeah. Expensive but it's a one time payment and they work really well.

I've purchased 3 sets of these this past year.  One for my wing, one for a friends wing & one set for my son's Nomad.  The two sets on the wings leaked to where the PSI after a week was down from 40 to 15psi.  The set on my son'e Nomad blew the clear cover off the stem on his front tire & he lost all pressure on the freeway @ 70mph.  I think they give you a false sense of security & are an accident waiting to happen.  Just my $00.02....-Rich
