Anyway, got him in a trap. Big boy he is...taking him to my daughters house today to release him in the woods next to their property. They live on 400acres so, the treelike is a pretty goof ways from the house. All turned out well without shooting anything. Was a good night...
And peanut butter and jelly biscuits and 2persimmons lured him in quickly.

We have dealt with dogs around here the same way Gavin. Tell the neighbors keep them on your own property. Few days later here comes the Retriever. Went home with 410 shot in him. Died in the owners garage. Folks dont know how destructive pets can be. Cats can kill chickens/ other birds as well as dogs. Neighbors dog came down a few weeks ago and was running the fenceline. Heard the neighbor yelling for him. Had my rifle out watching the the dog. Soon as he would have made a threat to the livestock, I'da dropped him. I own a Border Collie. He is smart and stays on the property even when I'm gone. He knows his job so he never runs off. Except when it thunders. He ran a 1/2 mile and I expected him to be shot. I would not be upset at the homeowner if he did.
Any one shoots toward my dog while I'm chasing him will have a large entry wound. He shot at me first...musta missed and hit my dog,but I got him when he went to reload. I'm sure he was driving into town to get more ammo but I think he put on his work uniform to try and fool me. Dont get me wrong, had many neighbors dogs around my house and even took them back home. But when they get into the livestock, thats a different thing. Not gonna let them kill $3000+ worth of animals. Dad tells stories of shooting their own dogs that killed calfs. Even sent one shepard to Vietnam cause he killed a few calfs.

Say what you will. Everyone is different. It has alot to do with what area of the country your from, if you live in the city or in the country. I grew up on a farm and have alot of respect for other peoples property. I know the hard work people put into their lawns and gardens. So you guys are right im a big dousche for standing up for what I believe in. I wish more people could work an a farm for one summer, maybe that would open their eyes and see what you worked so hard to produce get destroyed in one night.
You grew up on a farm but a few cat turds in your flower bed bother you? Something tells me it wasn't an actually working farm with real animals. If it was you would both be used to animal poop and appreciate the benefits of cats who have been farm staples for their pest control abilities for centuries, in fact since America was settled by Europe. So I'm calling bulls**t. I'm thinking your "farm" consisted of an old house and barn but actually produced nothing, just like the place my pretentious uncle calls a "farm". Or maybe you mean the funny farm in which case, I apologize. I dunno, but to me "hateful" is killing someone's pet just for doing what it does. The hate is not on this side of the table, sir. I may believe you to be a douchebag, but that doesn't mean I hate you either. I really don't feel that strongly about you either way. Dogg, I'm glad you were able to settle it without having to kill it. You have to do whatever you have to do but raccoons are just trying to survive like anything else.

Glad you got him Dogg! Let's hope he didn't tell his family how much fun it was to live at your house! I had a bunch of Red Squirrels get into my work shop one year. Ate right through the floor, into the walls (which were insulated) where they dragged out most of the insulation before eating through the interior aspenite walls and getting into my shop. What a mess! At first they liked eating the rat bait cakes I put out for them, then got smart. I still have a Have-a-Heart trap from then as well. I relocated my catch as well - under ground though!

Ok, thought I had him. Heard the cage rattle, saw him in the cage, digger I would take him to my daughters today. Well, he played me for a fool. He never hit the trigger. He sat in front of it, ate the sandwiches, ate the persimmons, and waited for me to leave so he could walk back out of the cage and resume living under my dam stove. Animal is no help, dnr is no help. I got a friend coming over with a silenced .22 and subsonic rounds to take care of it. Just sad that I have to resort to killing him instead of relocating... I keep you informed tomorrow.

You have to put the bait all the way back on the trap door (or even down behind it), not in front of it.
And it is a good idea to vice grip the doors for transport..... I have had a squirrel climb my face before from the supposedly locked doors.

Those animals are smart..... you have to cover the trip mechanism (tray) and probably at least half the trap to force it to go in the front door. They were reaching in and pull out the food from the sides or back, hence my need to cover the food area. Use a black trash bag and some tape to cover the back half of the trap to make them come in the front door.
I once had 3 racoons in/on one trap... two were actually inside and the other guy was on top trying to get his buddies out. Next door neighbor called, woke me up, and told me something weird was in or on my trap, he could not see it clearly. I went to the kitchen and looked out and that is what I saw, so I opened the kitchen window and popped the one on top with a regular .22 round in a single shot mode of a bolt action (kept the muzzle inside so the report would be inside the house), then put in some Colobri or Subsonics and went out and took care of the other two with a few shots. My neighbors are close and I have eliminated some Ground Hogs, Racoons and a Skunk, with the trap and/or a 22. You can do it.... good luck. Just be thankful it's not a skunk.......

Personally I can't understand the need to kill anything that is not actually; 1. A threat to me 2. Food. Don't think racoons and so on deserve to die just 'cos they are on your property... a fox after yer chickens, sure, but a raccon. Nope. No need. No need to kill anything that don't need to be killed. Except real estate agents, obviously. And people who are left handed. And anyone who doesn't like apple pie and ice cream on Sundays Forget shooting, lets round em up, put em in a field.,. l And BOMB THE BASTARDS!!! Er, no. No, no. no. NO. Tiime for my medication, nurse...

I agree, I'm a live and let liver person myself, although rampant overpopulation needs to be controlled. But raccoons can be very, very dangerous. They're cool animals in their own way. Very smart and dexterous. But they also can be territorial and carry rabies among other diseases. Personally, I'd do everything within my power to get rid of it without killing it, but I'm not gonna tell anyone else how to handle that. I think Dogg has already done a lot ore towards that end than many people would.

Speaking of Purple Grackles, I helped my neighbor once when I was about ten. I had picked up a homemade firecracker cannon somewhere and he had a huge Martin house on the corner of his garden sitting on a 15' pole, the Grackles loved it. He asked me one day if I knew how to get rid of them, told him I had the answer...my cannon. He gave me the OK to try it, so I removed the cap on the back end and inserted the largest firecracker I could find...sucker was like a small stick of dynamite. The cap had a hole in it for the fuse, I filled the barrel first with some wadding then a bunch of heavy sand and pea gravel. Blocked the base so it wouldn't move, took careful aim at the birdhouse, and lit the fuse. His three story Martin house was now a one story bungalow on a 15' tall post, took the entire top off. Got rid of the Grackles though. I was upset with him, he never thanked me for getting rid of them. Y'all realize that grackles are protected migratory birds....shooting them could get ya in trouble with the Fed....

Say whaaaatt??? Never heard that. Only 'bird' I heard was 'protected' up here was the Canadian goose. We have very little pheasant and quail around and even them are not protected.
