May is Motorcycle Safety Month (Posted: Tuesday, May 05, 2009)

May has been designated Motorcycle Safety Month by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. With spring in the air and summer around the corner, more people will be on motorcycles.

Consider these statistics:

* Motorcyclists are about 35 times more likely than passenger car occupants to die in a traffic crash, per vehicle mile traveled.
* One out of four motorcycle riders in fatal crashes in 2007 were riding their vehicles with an invalid license.
* 41 percent of motorcycle riders who died in single-vehicle crashes in 2007 had blood alcohol content levels of .08 g/dL or higher.
* 20 percent of passenger vehicle crashes result in injury or death, and an astounding 80 percent of motorcycle crashes result in injury or death.
* In nine years, motorcycle deaths have more than doubled in the United States. From 2,116 in 1997 to 5,154 in 2007... not a pretty trend.
* Half of motorcycle fatalities in single vehicle crashes relate to problems negotiating a curve prior to a crash.
* Almost 60 percent of motorcyclist fatalities in single vehicle crashes occur at night.

The company got a lot of heat from the motorcyclist that work in our plant and the company pulled the post today.

My employer has a policy that states, "The only personal vehicles authorized for business use are four (4)-wheel vehicles properly licensed to be driven on a public thoroughfare."  This means that, if I need to travel to a meeting or go out in the field to look at a job, I am not allowed to take my bike.  Or, if I do take it, it is at my own expense and I will not be reimbursed for mileage.  This makes it kind of tough when I commute by bike almost every day throughout the summer and a meeting comes up last minute where I have to service a client or respond to a problem.  My local supervisors really do not care if I ride...I even had one tell me, "f*#k 'em...ride it".  But that is the official corporate policy.

My last employeer had a policy that kept me from ever being reimbursed for mileage. They didn't care if I drove it to work, but they wouldn't pay mileage for meetings. They considered the bike a recreational vehicle despite the fact it was my main vehicle. I remember the financial secretary getting huffy with me about mileage up to the mountains for a meeting I was trying to get out of. I finally said, 'screw it, i'm riding, i'll pay it myself.'  I went up and sat through the meeting reading a map. Realized how close I was to Hwy 129, and left after the meeting and rode the dragon and had dinner in Cherokee.

I hate those kinds of policies.

My current employeer pays me mileage on the bike every month to travel. They have never said a word about what I drive.

Could be worse. My Paw Paw was a truck driver back in the days when that meant white shirts and ties.  He was in hiring and firing for a long time. He used to tell me the story of a driver showing up to work on a brand new bike. The boss told Paw Paw to fire him, because if he didn't care about his life, then he shouldn't be driving their trucks.  Could be much worse.

I retired from the State of Fla. and my job for many years involved travel. Some of it was out of state when I was on a federally funded task force, and a lot was in-state. Since I live in the Orlando, Fl. area I'm about 250 miles from the capital in Tallahassee where I periodically had to attend meetings, seminars, etc., all that real interesting crap. I often would ride the Wing I had at the time, no problem getting mileage when I used it. And more than once I would fly myself if a plane was available on short notice. The first time I flew, the gal in Tallahassee that OK'd the expense report asked me what my tie down cost was so I told her. She called the FBO and they faxed a voucher to her, she added it to my mileage. I couldn't get extra mileage, had to use the standard chart between cities, but I always got reimbursed for tie down which I thought was kinda cool. I found out they actually liked it when I flew because the perdiem was less, and often I didn't stay overnight. I'll never forget my boss's surprise the first time I flew to some official doings, I took off at 6:45am and got there before 8:00. The meeting and a tour of some facilities was overwith by 2:00pm that same day so I got a quick shuttle back to the airport. I was off the ground by 2:45 and back in the office before 5:00. About half the rest of the attendees either stayed over and flew home commercial the next morning, or drew extra perdiem for getting home late, plus taking the time off the next day for having worked past five. They all knew if I flew myself, they saved money in most cases unless the weather turned real bad, in fact they encouraged me to fly.

In one case, I took off about an hour after some friends did who were driving back to Tampa. I knew the car they were in....bright yellow convertible and it was "top down" weather. So, just for the heck of it instead of flying direct, I started to follow the interstate I knew they were using and sure enough...I caught up with them. I dropped down to a legal altitude and flew alongside until they started waving and I waggled my wings then circled them before heading home. My cell phone started to buzz but I left it alone until I landed(illegal to use). When I checked my messages, I got some good-natured zingers from everybody so I called them back to tell them I was home. They hadn't reached the halfway point yet so had some choice comments which will not be repeated here. Wink
