Maybe now my friend Harley Joe who buy's a new Harley every year will be able to take his wife on a road trip without cooking her right leg . Myself I see the hardcore masses not going for this and sells falling through the floor . Or it goes over as a hit with them and the classifieds will have even more Harleys for sale with everyone wanting the lastest and greatest  Undecided

Harley Davidson V-Twin with water cooled heads
The cooling system, consists of 2 radiators, fans and hoses hidden within the fairing. A water pump is centrally located at the bottom front center of the frame. The water passages within the heads are rather basic, a simple loop that carries the coolant more or less along the exhaust passages and wraps back around the valves before returning to the radiator.

Harley Davidson V-Twin water cooling system
Although the patent shows and describes the cooling system installed on a Harley touring bike, the patent states:

Before any embodiments of the invention are explained in detail, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited in its application to the details of construction and the arrangement of components set forth in the following description or illustrated in the following drawings. The invention is capable of other embodiments and of being practiced or of being carried out in various ways. Also, it is to be understood that the phraseology and terminology used herein is for the purpose of description and should not be regarded as limiting.

... which basically means it can show up arranged to work on any of the bikes in their lineup.

The entire cooling system seems pretty well worked out and ready for production which may mean it will show up very soon, maybe as soon as 2012. It's only a matter of time.

What will they ride instead? Jap crap?

This is kind of old news though. I remember a big hullabaloo about a year ago over this.

I wasn't attacking you, just pointing out that the liquid cooled heads thing got a good going over back when the patent was applied for and that was a while ago. If you search you'll probably find a thread and more info therein.

But I'm curious why you think the hardcore fan base will abandon H-D. Are they mindless lemmings who swallow whatever the mo-co feeds them or are they really hung up on the air-cooling thing? Because I hear the argument (not necessarily from you) that they're lemmings from the same people that say that they won't buy this product. But those two theories are at odds with each other. Thing is, HARLEY people really have no other choice that to either buy H-D or cease being Harley people.

I think Harley will sell them after some thought on the matter and once again you are correct. What else would they ride ?
I know in my riding circle a couple that would buy them  if they got 1 mpg and would'nt go over 20 mph....One of them is Harley Joe that took his wife out west this year and almost cooked her right leg off with exhaust heat.

They get hot, there's no doubt about that. But I'm not 100% sure this will alleviate that particular problem as it might be exhaust heat that's cooking her leg. I think this liquid cooled head is for emissions.

I know that when I wrapped the headers on my Buell the difference was dramatic.

Joe, last year NITRO posted about this same subject.  believe it or not, it got LOCKED by Willow!!!  (too contraversial i guess!! Grin)  to me it would just make sence, wouldn't it make the engine last longer if it wasn't so hot!!

Yes but only because emissions laws require them to run so lean. Liquid cooling in and of itself is not necessarily a life extender.

It is for emission issues if they do end up going this way. Do you recall the V-rod, the red headed step child. Even that hasn't been too well recieved by the Harley crowd, even after all the drag racing that has been done with it.

I was gonna say what about the V-rod, they already took a step down that road. maybe there's no going back.

100 years from now someone's going to ask what a aircooled motorcycle is?  uglystupid2

The VRod ws an alternative though. If the H-D air and oil cooled engine disappears altogether there will be no alternative within the confines of the brand.

Holy craaaap, that could be the engine for the Valkyrie if they decide to revive it.  Gas mileage would really suck though, but would it ever move....V12 baby.  The women would flock all over us. Grin Grin

Harley riders will stick with their Harleys no matter what, it would cost them to much to buy all new clothes.

I think the V-Rod flopped among the typical HD crowd for reasons other than being water-cooled.  The motor didn't sound like a HD motor.  It didn't look like a HD motor.  The entire bike was a radical departure from the typical HD bike.  However, I do think that if they had put the V-Rod motor into a touring frame with more traditional styling and sound, it would have been welcomed.
