I had to sell my lathe in the divorce and I want (need) a replacement. I have been looking at northern tools lathe milling and drilling combo and would like to know if someone has first hand info as to the worth or quality of this machine.
I am not doing production machining, but will use to make some proto types and I build some minatures of various items. I have a good drill press, but could use the milling capabilities.   Right now I have limited space .

I was in Northern Tool or what the hell ever they call it now, last week and they had a lathe on display.

Looked like a rather handy little piece of equipment.

I don't have a need and we don't have space at the shop, so I looked it over and walked on back to Go-Carts.   Grandkids tore hell out of our old cart, there dad had as a kid, grandpa rode it back then also.  It was cheaper to replace than to fix.   So now we have a parts cart, that is after Santa Claus comes the 25th.

I haven't looked at the Northern tool small lathes, but, be wary.. Many of the little lathes have plastic gears for drive, and the tolerances are way out of control.

I would check craigslist for a small southbend or ??  I keep a small one at my dads for the occasional project.  They are available, just maybe not overnight...  my .02

What are you looking to spend?   My father's lathe has been sitting idle in his garage since he passed away years ago. You can see some pics of it, and the accessories for it, here....  http://s55.photobucket.com/albums/g152/pavtxer/Lathe/?start=all

i love my Yates American lathe!  it's a few dozen years old, probably older then most riders on this site, but it's built rock solid!  (i know, it's NOT the type of lathe you're looking for!!  Wink)

Look at Grizzly tools,  I have their 9X19 lathe, I am really happy with it. I also have their bench top milling machine, It is junk with plastic drive gears, I spent have as much as the machine to upgrade it to an adjustable belt drive to replace the gears.

That south bend lathe is a perfect lathe for a home shop.Sure beats some of the modern lathes. If taken care of it will last generations .I wish it was closer

I have a Shop Fox I bought new in 2006, 16 inch swing, 46 in between centers, with a milling head attached. Real good machine, it is an import, but I have used the crap out of it for over 6 years now, with out a hiccup. Real solid machine, purchased it from Wholesale tool in Tampa.  $4600 out  the door.
