I sold my baby, a 2001 Standard, several years ago after putting 28,000 miles on it, bought a Suzuki M109R which I also loved and put 30,000 miles on it.  I bought a couple other non-cruiser bikes, then bought an 02 Interstate with a Bushtec trailer.  Decided I really like the 2-up long distance riding, but wasn't thrilled with the top heavy handing and poor fuel economy of the Interstate, so I sold the Interstate, kept the Bushtec, and bought an 07 Goldwing! Then I sold the 109!  Whew!  Been a busy summer!  But, that left me without a Cruiser, so...... I bought this a month ago!

It's a beautiful bike.  I've always loved the 30s grill they went with.

You shouldn't have sold that '02 I/S.  As it was the only one ever made, you coulda gotten a lot of $$$ for it.  2funny

(The last year for the I/S was 2001).

Opps, Actually, it was a 2000!  Didn't have it very long before moving to the Goldwing!  It was a beauty, blue & silver, just decided the Goldwing might suit my needs better!  No comparison in the looks department though!  The Interstate, in my opinion, is much better looking than the Goldwing!

And, no, I won't be pulling the trailer with the Rune!  The Rune will have the single rider around town duty!

Shoot, that beats Paul Sr."machine"  and Paul Jr. and Jesse's bikes hands down.

In fact, that is the problem I have with the Runes. They are show bikes. They just don't seem practical as a touring platform. Biker weekends and poker runs. Which is perfectly fine. Just not for me.

But a beautiful bike for sure.

I've been thinking about a Rune for quite a while.   I attacked the problem from a different prospective.   Have a GL1800 which the wife and I ride at our vacation home.   Have my son's Nomad 1500 at home that I cruise around on i up.  Thought a Rune would be cool and have been looking at them intently.   Ended up buying a '98 Standard figuring I can get some fun out of it for $10K less.    Just picked it up, not sure if I'm missing $10K worth of fun yet.

I personally love the looks of the Rune, though I am not sure I can picture it with a windshield or faring, saddle bags, and such.....but I'd ride the hell out of it...and love every minute..

Forgot to say CONGRATULATIONS!

There are a couple of '04 Rune's CBC EB both under 10K miles clean, they are asking $16K  OBO.   Seems like the $16K is the lower threshold.  Toying with the idea of offering $15K cash.  Wondering what kind of deal you got, you seem to be a professional trader of bikes.

Thanks

JC

I heard the Rune's EAT tires.

Any truth to that?

I'd LOVE to add a Rune to my stable of a 02 standard and a 99 IS.

A guy that rides with us from time to time has one and he claims about 5,500 miles on the rear and not a hellofa lot better on the front. This guy can't even ride that well so I'm guessin' a rider would chew them to the cords much faster  Undecided

Well a car tire would help... (Flame suit on)

But not for the front one.  I'd HATE to have to put a front tire on it 3 times a year.

I spoke with a guy who has a Rune for sale yesterday.  He told me that because of the weight and length of the bike that the front tire gets eaten up almost as fast as the rear.  He replaced both after 8K.  Another guy who is selling his has new tires at 6.5K.

The Honda manual calls for 3.7 hours of labor to change them per one of the sellers and his cost for tires and
labor was close to $1,000.   So you pay to play with this bike.

Jabba, I was gonna ask the same thing about the tire.  Evil  Nice scooter and color, but I can't get one till the lottery pays off.  Still love my 99 I/S though.

Sorry for the delayed response!  I paid $16.500 for mine with 2500 miles on it, but then I drove 1,100 miles each way to get it.

Nope, won't be towing the trailer with the Rune!  She's pretty much gonna be used for around town stuff and the couple hundred mile runs here and there!

The front tire issue is true!  I assume because of the leignth, the amount of weight up front, and probably the funky front suspension!  My Rune now has 2700 miles on it and I'd say the front tire will go maybe another 500 -1000 before needing to be replaced.  The rear tire still looks new!  According to a lot of guys on the Rune Forum, it's not uncommon for the factory Dunlop front tires to be replaced at 3000 - 3500 miles!! Shocked  It's crazy I know, but I also hear that many of the aftermarket tires, including Dunlop will go 7000 - 8000 miles on front.  That I can live with!  As far as 3.5 hours shop time to change the tire, I'm not sure, but a local Honda shop told me that it's probably an hour to do the front tire.  The front suspension is unique for sure, but it still looks like pulling the axle bolt would drop the wheel right out!  Must be somthing more to it!  I have heard that with experiance the rear tire will come off without removing the fender, but the book does call for removing it.  The rear fender wraps 3/4 way around that rear tire!  I'll know more in a few months when I've had a chance to finish off the front rubber!

The Rune will never remove the GL1800 from it's throne as the touring king, but, there are a lot of folks who mount 2-up seats and windshields on the Rune and put on tens of thousands of miles!  I know of a few with close to 100,000 miles on them.  Power train is bullit proof, tires don't last long, and riding position is more arms forward, but the ride is smooth and comfortable, the power is ample, and if you don't mind taking a $30K (when new) bike and stacking the miles on it, there's absolutely no reason why you couldn't do it on a Rune!  Heck, the HD guys don't bat an eye at droping $25K - $30K on a bike and loading the miles on them, why should a Rune rider?

I won't leave the GL1800 home to ride the Rune on the long trips, but I certainly plan on putting a lot of miles on the Rune!  Grin
