Thinking about buying / building a GL something, most likely a GL1000. Anyone have any input as to years or models that better or worse?
Yes, I've been lurking the naked GoldWing sites, Just thought i ask here.

I like the GL1100 naked wings. Prefer the 82/83 models cause the carbs have screw in jets, easier to rebuild. The 82/83 models also have a different gear ratio, less rpm at cruising speed. Not to say the 80/81's aren't good.  This is an 81 I brought back to shape a couple years ago. Just sold it a month ago, fella made an offer I couldn't refuse.

I always wanted a 1984 Standard GW, they made a few. Scarce. I haven't seen one for a long time.

u going to supercharge it like this?,

http://www.randakks.com/Randakk's%20Endurance%20Special.htm

design wise honda removed most of the bugs of the GL1000/1100 engines when they built the GL1200. I think the last yr a FI model was available.

The 1975's are the fastest . I have both a 75 and a 79. The 79 rides a bit better..Different steering head bearings..75's rattle more at idle due to no auto tensioner on the cam chain and a different lope at idle ..Different handle bars...You will need to redo the suspension. G

Go to Randakk's site for parts and info.. The red 75 below is one of his restorations. My brother bought it off the guy that had it Randakk restore it and I got it after my brother passed on.
You can see it on Randakks site. We upgraded the rear suspension to Works Shocks.
Other differences are the gauge cluster on the 78's and 79's mounted on the false tank.
75's -77 have a better muffler system..it is very quiet. The 78's-79 are louder..

They all attract attentiion like the Valkyrie

If I bought another one I'd look for a 1984 Standard(naked)...

Standard 1982 or 1983 GL1100s.

The best of both worlds would be an 82 with the 83 wheels,....period!

Talking from experience, low mileage examples are out there, but be wary as maintenence parts are getting very expensive as supplies are dwindling. Most repops are less than ideal.

Good luck.

Repops are paterned maintainence items, like caliper and carb rebuild kits.

Jeff, My FD buddy has either a 75 or 76 that is in suprisingly good shape, and I know he wants to get rid of it. He didn't ride it at all last year, but it has stabilized fuel and has been on a battery tender. As I recall under 20K miles. (red in color, all complete, even the seat is in great shape.)
I am sure he will sell it well below market, and I can store it for ya until the next time your up this way. If you want more info send me a PM or give me a call. If you dont have my cell anymore I have yours if you havent changed it.

I had been looking for an '84 Std. also. A couple months back there was an '84 Std. for sale on Craig's List, seems like it was somewhere around Plant City.  It was all there but had been sitting for a few years and was kinda rough, guy only wanted $500 and would help you load it up. I sent him a note through CL (no phone listed on the ad) but he never responded. The ad eventually disappeared so have no idea what happened to it.

Here's an ad I was thinking of checking out, just don't know if the owner knows what he has. Calls it an '84 1100....it's either an '84 or an 1100, maybe it's a typo. Kind of a neat looking ride.

It sounds like you checked out NakedGoldWings site ??
They will be able to answer ANY question you may have .... pretty smart bunch
http://www.ngwclub.com/

I had an '83 that attracted a lot of attention where ever I went. It was the only year with the cast mag wheels besides the '84. The thing would get up an go when pushed. I always wanted a Valkyrie and could only afford to get one if I sold the '83 so, she had to go. I had a lot of good times on that bike. The NGW site is putting together a run out to the Black Hills in 2012 .... 2nd "High Plains Gypsy Run" .... good people !!

My wifes GL1100 at our campground in Florida. The bike has been virtually bulletproof in 160K+ miles, and makes a good "hitchin post" for the dog too!

One key thing to check on a used 4cyl Wing is make sure the charging system is working propery, as you need to yank the engine to change the stator. There are a lot of charging system failures on older bikes as the years of heat, oil & vibration make insulation brittle and connections poor. Favorite trick to unload the bike was to put in a brand new fully charged battery for all test rides and act surprised when the bike died a week or so after they bought it. "I thought it was just the 6 year old battery so I replaced it before rnning the ad" he said with a straight face.................

My buddy David Ritsema found me a bike. It's pretty darn nice.  Grin

Now I just have to figure out how to get it here.  Undecided

That's a pretty nice bike ....  excellent condition !!  Not fond of the seat. Don't know if you knew this or not but the early Valkyrie driver seats (97-99) are popular with those old GoldWings, they mount up really nice.

Yeah I'm with you on the seat. It comes with the stock seat too. But I'm going to go with a whole different setup.

When I had my '83 I was one of the moderators over on the NGW site. The one thing they always preached when buying a used older 'Wing was replace the cam drive belts no matter what shape they are in.

The other thing a lot of the owners are doing now is using Harley mufflers. They can be found dirt cheap on ebay as takeoffs.

Anyway, Congrats on your find and have fun with that "Naked Wing"

Nice. That looks like it might be an old Corbin-Gentry seat. If it's in good shape it should be at least $100 minimum to somebody looking for one, so take care of it.
This is a K/Q C-G one from a SOHC CB750

I think I have one like that Wing's in a CB750 somewhere's also.

In case anyone's still looking, I ran across this one.
It's about an hour south of Kansas city.
