Last week, I picked up a 99 IS.

I've been wanting ANY Valk for 5 or 6 years and have been haunting
VRCC for that long finding out all I could.

Went out for a short ride a couple of days ago and have decided to
take the PO's advice about parking lot practice.

Last bike was an older Kawasaki Concours, and they are really different!

Valks are great bikes, riding with an experienced rider and taking a riding course would both be things that I bet you'd enjoy.

Welcome, and congratulations on your new bike.

It's much easier to ride than you'd think a land barge of it's size would be.

But slow maneuvers and stops can be a little squirrely at first.  Get the bike lined up as straight and level and positioned in your lane as you can..... before braking to a stop.  Don't know if your bike came with taller risers, but many claim the bike is easier to stop smoothly (and handle generally) with them than stock risers (many, like me, needed them to sit up straight to ride).

Take your time and get the feel of it, it won't be long........ and avoid any passengers until you are confident.  Dumping the wife off in the gas station is poor form (unless you secretly wish she not ride with you).   Smiley

:(Well, just crap!!! I am jealous.  I am constantly looking and slobbering all over myself. I thought I was done riding a couple years ago when I sold out my Harleys. Now, here I am wanting a Valk. I just love the looks of the big mama, and I'm old enough to tell anyone that don't like em to run their mouth somewhere else. Not a tuff guy, just an old opinionated fart head.  Cheesy

It being Christmas, Mama was not terribly happy, but after 18 years,
I'm pretty sure that will pass.

Was a heck of a deal, and came with Zumo 550,CB,  hitch, Harbor
Freight trailer, jack, adapter etc.

The man who sold it is no longer able to ride and was pretty sad to let
her go.

in my neck of the woods, Valk owners are adult riders and much appreciated by the local community. The parking lot practice was mainly due to the Valk engine giving it a lower center of gravity. You don't immediately sense the tilt angle on it. When new, you might stop the bike more titled than you had assumed it to be, with the inevitable situation of not being able to right the bike with your one foot on the ground, but not quite wanting to let the bike drop in front of an audience. There's always an audience around a Valk.

Welcome from another Newbe.
I have been riding a VTX1800C for a few years.  I ran across a 99 I/S in an estate in NJ in October and jumped on.  Had it shipped to Ohio and got it just in time to put it ito winter storage.  One short day ride then gone.  The one thing I know I need is a set of forward controls. At 6'5", 325# a new seat is also in order.  I have been riding for 45 years and the one thing I know for sure, the Bike is never "done"

Watch for Joe and Don's "Hillbilly Highway" ride over in WV. That would be a good one for you and you have time to practice handling the Valk before it happens.
