The story was the sled had a shorter distance to jump to break the record than the bike, thus the longer runway for the bike. But still, that sled had some gittyup!!!!!!!!!

I had a Skidoo 800x last year and that thing was crazy, it was a 2 stroke.  It could easily get up to 100mph+ in no time at all, you could easily loose for grip if you did not watch yourself, but it wasn't faster than my cousin's Arctic Cat 1100 turbo.  That thing is just nuts.  I decided to sell it because we don't get much snow around here anymore.

The reason the bike had a longer take off was due to it having a MUCH lower horsepower total.  They were both shooting for 400 feet.  When you do the math, the bike needed to be going at a certain speed when he hit the ramp to fly 400' given the total weight of the bike + rider.  It took him that distance to get up to speed.  He even had to start off on a 40 or 50 ft(can't remember) hill so the drop off could help him "launch" better at the start.  In the end he didn't have enough horsepower to achieve the necessary speed to get to 400'.  I believe he landed around 20 or so feet short.

In contrast, the snowmobile had horsepower to spare!  something like an 850cc motor on steroids.  He had so much power that they had trouble keeping the front end down.  So much so that they built his path on an angle to help prevent the front end from lifting to the point that he would lose steering control.  He ended up going 412 or 418 feet ( I've slept since then..).  Awesome, simple awesome.

It was a fun show......

I have been riding sleds for years.. Had to quit this year due to back problems..... Angry

But there are now off the floor sleds that have 175 horse!!!! (Artic Cat)

My 2000 Yamaha ONLY had 115 and would hit 80 in next to nothing... 2 stroke..fast enough for me.

All of the new Yamahas are now 4 strokes, based on sport bike engines with 130 to 150 horse.

Power to weight ratios are ridiculous!

I miss mine already.......
