As a firefighter, I feel weird asking for this. I need a SAFE ( cool to the touch, safe for 2 17 month old toddlers to be around) space heater. with a thermostat that can be set to a specific temperature (70 deg) The wife and I use these in their bedrooms to keep them warm. Don't run very often, just as more of a just in case thing. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. The current ones that are supposedly safe to touch get too hot for me to touch with my callused paws.....

Only "safe" space heater for 2 17 month old kids is one that is up and out of reach. No offense, but little kids are curious and WILL reach out and touch things, and parents can't be there all the time. If you get one have it mounted up and out of the way. Most heaters have a tip over safety to shut them off just in case they get tipped over.
Good luck.....

You might want to try one of the ones that looks like an old style radiator. If memory serves me, they are filled with an oil-like fluid.
+1... Had something similar in my boys room, when they were younger. Warm to hot to the touch, but not 'blistering' hot...

The oil filled heaters are too hot for your purpose... I have two of them. My neighbor has an Infrared heater that fits the bill though. They do not get hot to the touch and it does a great job in his place. Kinda pricey... but it is exactly what you are looking for. Other than that... maybe put a little fence in the corner of the room with a heater behind it, out of arms reach of the toddlers. Here is one example of the Infrared heater that I just pulled off the internet. (Googled) But do your own search and decide which is best for you. They are sold locally everywhere in the US. http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200459141_200459141?cm_mmc=Google-pla-_-Heaters-_-Electric%20Heaters-_-17915&ci_sku=17915&ci_gpa=pla&ci_kw={keyword}

That's the problem with globalization... better prices at the expense of loss of manufacturing jobs. Can't have it both ways.

You need to get the right one, since kids might touch it... I have the oil filled radiator ones, I think a child might just run away crying if he touched it, but little children burn/blister easier than us I think...

Isnt it funny how a thread goes over a bridge when trolls come out? Teach a cat to sleep withem. I put a warming matress pad on my daughter's bed. Safe, best thing I found and she wouldnt get outta bed, 5 days a year, we live in Tucson. I'll be quiet now.

i have a ceramic osolating heater in my 12 by 20 shed. it has a thermostat and you can set it to where you want..it will turn on and off by itself. i have it set at 68 degrees and even when it's down around 0 it keeps the shed at 68 degrees. i have the shed fully insulated just like a house would be..so i don't think you'd have any problem with it..cool to the touch. Here is one review..but there are 31 more.. http://www.lowes.com/pd_144568-24099-5119_0__?productId=3467897&Ntt=ceramic+heaters&pl=1¤tURL=%2Fpl__0__s%3FNtt%3Dceramic%2Bheaters&facetInfo=Features: 5 / 5 .Value: 5 / 5 .Design: 4 / 5 .Quality: 4 / 5 .Ease of use: 4 / 5 .The fan failed on my old Lasko Tower after about 5 yrs. But the good news is that when the fan quit the heating element automatically shut off, so Im pleased that it did not catch fire. I am satisfied with the use I got out of it and I bought this latest model. A small ceramic heater I owned before caught fire when the fan quit but it continued to heat, so it literally turned into a plastic torch. This heater is the only one I trust enough to sleep with it running. I have it in a 400 SF family room and it works great. I can feel it blowing warm air while sitting 6 ft away. It seems more powerful yet quieter than previous models. The only design flaw is that they should have left the buttons on top instead the front so you dont have to squat down to operate it. Of course, the remote performs all functions from wherever your sitting so its hardly a drawback. I would say the greatest feature is that you can hold your room temperature steady automatically with the built-in thermostat and 2 speed motor. Its also nice that it saves your favorite (last) temperature setting whenever you turn it on or off.
