I have a 98 standard that has been parked for about a year.  I am trying to get it back on the road.  I have good spark and fuel in the bowls when I checked the drains.

It will almost run on full choke but only on a couple of cylinders.  It seems that parked I may have plugged all of the jets.

I'm going to pull the jets, I do have a Factory Pro jet kit.  The bike being box-stock except that I de-smogged it about 6 years ago.  Running the fuel we have today I would appreciate any recommendation jet sizes to use.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Most just change out the slow jets to 38's..  At least that's what I've done on mine.   Good luck.

Thanks,

From what I have been reading I am planning on the 38 jets but not sure what would be a good choice with the main jets.

Leave the main jets the same size......  Just go up on the slow jets.

I agree with Jr I wouldn't change the jets. Some report installing new stock size because of the difficulty cleaning the plugged jets. I'm in a cold climate and run a tank of gas treated with Stabil before storage then treat the full tank when put to sleep. Bike starts like it's summer the next spring.

Thanks to all for the input.

I will leave the main jets alone and change the slow jets to #38.

Any suggestions on how to set the pilots?  I have a manual but not an easy project and I do not have a good tachometer.

I'm in Yuma Arizona, this is the good riding time of the year, want to get it back on the road.

Thanks

When you change to 38 slow jets, the pilot screws should be set to 1 3/4 to 2 turns out from lightly seated. My bike runs well at 1 3/4, others prefer 2 turns.
Be sure to clean out the fuel bowls and pilot circuits. That means remove the pilot screws and spray some cleaner in there. Be careful of small, easily lost parts.
You should also check your tank for rust, common on a bike that has been sitting unused. It's probably a good idea to clean the tank anyway. There's bound to be gunk in there ready to reclog the slow jets.
You will almost certainly need a new petcock screen as well.

The #35 stock slows are so small it's better to replace with new. Or #38's.

It would suk to pull the carbs & clean only to find they're no better off or even worse because they've been damaged from cleaning.

$30-$40.00 is worth it to me to guarantee I won't have to pull the carb bank a second time.

I would order the tiny orings for the pilot / curb idle jets , change them and clean out the pilot circiut GOOD  with cleaner and air , reset to what they were orig. at . most problems solved...

Is the only reason to go to 38s to prevent clogging of the 35s when storing the bike? I guess there is no m/g change with the 38s.......

The 38s can eliminate a flat spot just before the main jets come into play and give the bike smoother takeoff. They can hurt gas mileage, depending on where the pilot screws are set; 1 1/2 turns out for the frugal, 2 turns out if you'd rather not need the choke.

Also go ahead and pull the main's and get you something to clean them. I took some cooper wire and twisted some together to clean them. When Swoopie brought his to me doing the same thing every slow jet was clogged and 4 out of 6 main was clogged or almost clogged. I installed 38's set them to 1 3/4 turns out and bike run very well. You will see a little drop in mpg, but not a lot. More power on the lower and mid range.

Thanks,

I actually ordered #38 pilot jets and stock main jets.  I figured that as long as I was in there didn't want to go back again.  Thanks for the suggestion on the pilot screw "O" rings, I ordered a set today.

I bought the bike new and this is the second time into the carbs.  The first time I was looking for a problem that turned out the be the intake runner "O" rings AND the intake runners to the heads were warped and not fitting flat that resulted in my air leak.  I lapped them in until they were flat on wet-dry sandpaper on a flat surface.   I'll be checking them again this time.

I just HATE working with the air box.  I know how, just don't like it much.  I use the ratchet strap to pull it down as I get the carbs connected.

I did the desmog last time I was in the carbs, any other suggestions while I am in there?

I will be draining the carbs when the bike is parked for any length of time in the future.

Thanks
