Took off the tank and could not pull a vacuum - just gas - out of the vacuum tube.  Figured a bad diaphragm.  So rebuilt the petcock with a K&L kit with new spring, diaphragms.  Tied it back together in the correct format (spring, disc, big diaphragm, metal connector, fuel diaphragm) and vacuum holds great.  Put gas in the tank, put a clear tube on the gas outflow and no gas flowing at off.  Turned to on and no gas.  Pulled a vacuum and - no gas.  Switched to reserve and no gas with vacuum.  It's like the fuel diaphragm is not opening.  Tank has about 2 gallons in it.  Screen is clean.

Ideas?

you can pull a vac on the line, and then blow into the inlet into the petcock to see if it is opening up.

pulled the petcock off and looked down the outlet and the diaphragm is opening when I put vacuum on it.  Put the petcock back  on and on reserve, I finally got it to flow but there were bubbles in the flow.  Turned it to ON and tilted the tank back - no flow.  Turned it back to reserve and it doesn't flow with vacuum.

I think the petcock itself may be bad, i.e, ball sticking.

Are you getting positive feedback, i.e. is it clicking into place, when you move the selector from one position to another?

If not, I agree that the ball & spring part of the mechanism might not be working.

I pulled it apart again, reset everything with a new kit and now it works.  Go figure.  The first kit was bad.  Appears the fuel diaphragm may have been the wrong one - looks different than the second one and the original.

Problem solved - now have to get the carbs clean out.  This thing runs horribly.

I'm curious.  Was the rebuild kit an OEM cover set kit or one of the others that only has the plastic parts?

Neither one of us got to ride 429 miles today, so we've had to find fun somewhere else...   Grin
