The first part of my conversion to a full touring bike has been completed. I went with a harley fairing build, and added 4 extra gauges. The light bar came from a harley as well. I made brackets based off a harley, and attached them to memphis shades fork clamps. This mounting made mounting the hd light bar just like a harley.

Next is to get some good hard bags, and I'm thinking of going with the Tuskayu Jumbo Strongs. The only reason I haven't already ordered them is that I want to us a harley tour pack or one of that same style. I'm just not sure how they would look together. Everything I've read about the Tsuakyu products has been posative. Does anyone have a good size comparision to the Tourer's OE bags, I've been looking for deacent set and always fall short with my wallet.

Also if anyone is interested on possibly knows anyone, when I do make the final decision I'll have a set of k-drive bags available.

Dave, what model of HD fairing is that from? I have one mounted without the inner part, from an FLHT as I recall. I'd like to add the inner fairing but not sure what would fit.

Nice job on the fairing.  I likey.   cooldude

Don't know how to compare the Jumbo Strongs to the OEM's.....but the Jumbos are veeeery wide.  They WILL make your butt look big.   Grin  I've seen pics of a few bikes with them mounted.  If you want, I can post a few here later.  The Strong bags (the Strong bags....not the Jumbo's) are veeeery close to the OEM, but have more of a slant at the front.  Here's a link to a guy that mounted the Strongs....and also mounted the Tsukayu trunk on his Valk also.  He has lots of pics and installation tips....

http://www.valkyrieguy.com/

I'm working on mounting a Harley leather tour pak mated with a set of Mustang bags on mine.  They are the exact same bag as the Tsukayu "quick release strong" bags.....just with Mustang's covering.  I'm mounting them with OEM leather bag mounts that I'm welding some plate too.  One side is done and I'm waiting on the other side to get welded (it's been a long wait...but that's another story.....I really need to learn how to weld....especially TIG).

As for a Valk with hardly bags.....there's a pic or two on this board of someone with a red Valk that has Harley bags and a Harley tour pak mounted.  I thought I had that pic, but haven't been able to find it to post it.  Maybe someone else that has it will.

However....here's a bike that has a Harely tour pak mounted that has some Harley looking bags mounted.  I don't think that they are Harley bags, but they're close.  They look very much like the Tsukayu Patrol bags.

Why not just the Tsukayu Strong (or jumbo strong) and a Tsukayu trunk?

http://www.tsukayu.com/Strong%20Valkyrie2.html

Remember, the Interstate was rushed to production and resulted in different cable bag lid mounts being necessary because the tourer hinge-mounted lids hit the trunk.  It appears from the pics, that the Tsukayu hinge mount bags clear the trunk.

If everything else is round, won't the HD tour pack (regular or chopped) be pretty boxey?

Kansas City Kid (KCK) from oHIo, put Harley bags, tour pack, seat and fairing on his STD.

He sold it several years ago and it has just gotten lost in cyber space somewhere.

Apparently the new owner never came to this site as I have never heard of or seen the bike after KCK sold it.

I've sent KCK an email asking for a picture of his old ride.    I'm lost as to what he rides now, he had a Bergman for awhile, then I think he went to a BMW, but, whatever he gets he doesn't seem to hold onto them very long.

Rig was painted with a rattle can and looked very good.

My 97 std came with soft bags.  I put a set of IS bags on it, and an aftermarket trunk.  Painted to match the purple/white paint scheme.  I think it looks great.  Unless just a bar hopper, hard to imagine without something for storage.

The guy I got my k-drive bags from locally put some off a police bike on his, looks good. I'd do the same to match the fairing, and the trunk later(maybe). For the cost I like the look of the storngs and jumbos, really would like to be able to drop my half helmet into one of the bags unitl I can fund the trunk project, but the hd bags aren't wide enough (tried on my dads glide).

The outer is supposed to fit the 96 and up FLHT line (got it from Calvary fiberglass on ebay but haven't seen any from them since), inner is from the newer 07 up I believe since it doesn't have the hole for the throttle cables.

Why not just the Tsukayu Strong (or jumbo strong) and a Tsukayu trunk?

The HD tour pack being boxy compared to the tsukayu strong or jumbo bags is a concern of mine and that is why I haven't already ordered them. I can get HD or similar style trunks for less then the tsukayu with greater capacity. Also it doesn't appear that there is a wrap around backrest for the tsukayu trunk or the ability to easily add rear speaker pods. Maximum comfort for the wife is what I'm after, trying to get her to ride with me more. Considering just going with some HD bags, but would prefer something a little larger.

Found this on Tsukayu's website, don't think it looks bad. Was on the bottom of the page for the U-shape bar for additional support.
http://www.tsukayu.com/web%20photos/U%20Shape%20Bar/100_1205_chop_resize.jpg

Would really like to get some of the OEM bags and mounts, all I've seen are a little pricey for me since they'll need paint, and missing hardware replaced.

Well i missed out on a set of the OEM bags and mounts on eBay twice, the first time i was the only bidder. Unfortunately I waited till the last moment and mistyped  my bid and didn't meet the reserve. I didn't see that they got re-listed with a buy it now of 600 until a couple of hours after someone else was able to take advantage of that price. I guess it wasn't meant to be, also after painting and all the necessary hardware was taken care of they would have wound up about double what the Jumbo Strong bags from Tsukayu will cost.

Anyone have any experience with the new style on the Tsukayu Jumbos? I have not been able to find any pics of them installed on a valk, only the old side opening style. I'm concerned with the new opening style clearing a large trunk like one from a hd or possibly one of the Tsukayu audio tour packs(just not sure about the look with the integral speaker mounts).

The road rash is very shallow & will be very easy to fix along with the reapint. The seller also included some of the hardware even though he said it came with none. The bag mounts are perfect.  cooldude The missing hardware will run me about $150 & I've got some good body shop connections to work for the painting. I figure I'll have about $950 in the total conversion to OEM bags.
Anyways, the National Cycle CruiserLiner bags & mounts will go on the classifieds when I'm done re-doing the OE's.

I have a set of jumbo strongs, went with the primer ones. Also have the chrome side guards & racks on the lids.
I really like them, so far on problems. Mounted them last winter.
They are wide, but with the size of the Valk. I think it fits very well. The lines look like they where made just of it. The lids open toward the front but hinge at an angle to the outside of the bike so you have clearance for a trunk.
Biggest problem I had was drilling the mounting holes, as they do not come drilled. Hard to hold both just in the correct position so they match. Trying to follow the instructions seemed even harder.
After I thought about it for a while I mage a jig out of angle iron that fit long ways on the exhaust, with 2 pieces weld at 90 degree angle that would support the bags. I installed the mounts that comes with the bags (nice mounts) then used a square to aline the jig 90 degrees to the mounts. I rapped the exhaust with tape so it would not get scratched and held the jig in place with hose clamps. Now all that is left is to put the proper spacing between the exhaust and the bottom of the bags. I used pieces of 1/2 in plywood cut just big enough to support the bag, I believe I stacked 3 pieces on top of each other. Now all you have to do is sit the bag on the jig, it's the right height because of the spaces that where added. move it front to back to where you think it looks good, mark and drill. Mine are flush with the back of the fender. Take the jig off and mount on the other exhaust and do it all again.

Sounds hard but it only took 1 1/2 hrs total to mount both after making the jig. About 45 min ti cut & make jig. I can email you pics if you want, can't figure out how to post pics here.

I'd be interested in seeing your bag mounting jig pics too scooby.

Putting pics on here is easy.  Upload your pics to Photobucket and then put them on here.  After you've got them on Photobucket, click on the little "Insert Image" icon thingy (just above in your reply box) and copy/paste your pic.  Easy.

Glad someone who will appreciate them got them. I was really surprised when I was then only bid on their first listing. They buy it now option was reduced 1/3 from the first at $900. They were within driving distance, but with uncertainties on hardware and even if I could have rode down and bolted them on shipping was probably still cheaper at 270 miles one way. I'd like to see pics when you've got them finished. My loss was your gain

I definitively would like to see the pics, if you want I could put them up for you if you don't have Photobucket, or don't want to set up and account to do so.
I think for the money the Tsukayu products are a great option, based on what I've read about them. Wish I could see some in person.

How much room did you leave between the bottom of the jumbos and your exhaust?  It doesn't look like much....1/2 to 3/4 inch maybe.  Any heating issues on the bags?

There was a Valk for sale up in Kingston, Wa that had a set of Road King bags on it, that looked very nice.  I'd have sworn they were made for a Valk. Unfortunately, I have no pics of it.

Not trying to hijack, but has anyone done hardly hard bags on the Valk?

Fellow Hoosier, Frye's son Andy, has HD bags on his Valk.

Heres my 97 Valk with the jumbo strongs, and yes they were a pain to install

They look great, what kind of exhaust is that?
How wide is your valk overall with them installed?

Could you give me some details on the inside dimensions of your bags? I could just go with the quick release strong bags and fab my own brackets. Or maybe go with a set of these

Not having the cutout on the back of the bag should give me more inside room without the bags being too large. Mustang gives larger numbers than Tsukayu for the dimensions but then shows a lesser capacity in liters, I guess it's all in how they measure them. Those mustangs do look good, I had one of their seats on my last ride and after 10 years it still looked great.

Dave, the biggest reason why I have been searching so hard & was willing to pay over $600 for a set of damaged & parts missing OEM bags was because of the OE mounting. When Kim was first learning to handle the Valkyrie she had a couple of stationary "mishaps". With the OE bag mounts & engine guards the Valk just tipped over until it rested on the bars. Very little evidence of damage. cooldude I like that feature very much.
Anyways, the total of OE parts to replace what was missing on the E-bay bags I bought was right at $200. So now I'm into them for $860 & I just have paint & minor finish work to go. I hope to have right at a grand in the Tourer bag conversion when I'm done.
I've got right at $400 in the Tourer windshield including new OE glass so for MOL $1400 I have turned a '99 Standard to a '99 Tourer with a combo of used & OE parts.
The National Cycle bags & mounts I have on there now are great but I still prefer the OE over most any aftermarket bag set up. Keep searching for OE's, I think it's worth it!

I'll get those measurements for you tomorrow!  cooldude

Hey BF there about 3/4 of an inch from the exhaust, and I haven't had any issues with the heat from the exhaust.

The exhaust is OEM with the baffles drilled out with 4" truck stacks and Grumpies tips on them. I have never messured it, but I know she sure is a wide fat bottem girl, and the hitch I put on her just made her a lot wider 2funny

Sure.  I'll take some measurments and maybe a couple pics later tonight and post 'em up for you.  btw.....I've got a set of those bag mounts you linked to.  Thought about using them to mount the Mustangs but went with modding my original set of OEM leather bag mounts instead.  The OEM's let me tuck the Mustangs closer to the bike by about 3/4 of an inch each side.  I wanted them closer to the bike because I'm trying (still) to mount the bags and use the OEM bag guards with the Mustangs (I've got to make some spacers for the bag guards first).  If you want them (they've never been used or mounted to the bike), you can have them for 30 bucks shipped (paypal).
