Any day that you ride is a good day!

« on: January 12, 2012, 07:37:02 PM »

Letter from a farm kid, sent from the San Diego Marine Corps Recruit Training Center:

Dear Ma and Pa,

I am well.

Hope you are.

Tell Brother Walt and Brother Elmer the Marine Corps beats working for old man Minch by a mile.

Tell them to join up quick before all of the places are filled.

I was restless at first because you got to stay in bed till nearly 6 AM, but I am getting so I like to sleep late.

Tell Walt and Elmer all you do before breakfast is smooth your cot, and shine some things.

No hogs to slop, feed to pitch, mash to mix, wood to split, fire to lay. Practically nothing.
Men got to shave but it is not so bad, there's warm water.

Breakfast is strong on trimmings like fruit juice, cereal, eggs, bacon, etc., but kind of weak on chops, potatoes, ham, steak, fried egg plant, pie and other regular food, but tell Walt and Elmer you can always sit by the two city boys that live on coffee.

Their food plus yours holds you till noon when you get fed again.

It's no wonder these city boys can't walk much. We go on 'route marches,' which the platoon sergeant says are long walks to harden us.

If he thinks so, it's not my place to tell him different. A 'route march' is about as far as to our mailbox at home.

Then the city guys get sore feet and we all ride back in trucks. The country is nice but awful flat.

The sergeant is like a school teacher.. He nags a lot.

The Captain is like the school board.

Majors and colonels just ride around and frown. They don't bother you none.

This next will kill Walt and Elmer with laughing.

I keep getting medals for shooting . I don't know why.

The bulls-eye is near as big as a chipmunk head and don't move, and it ain't shooting at you like the Higgett boys at home.

All you got to do is lie there all comfortable and hit it.

You don't even load your own cartridges. They come in boxes.

Then we have what they call hand-to-hand combat training.

You get to wrestle with them city boys.

I have to be real careful though, they break real easy.

It ain't like fighting with that ole bull at home.

I'm about the best they got in this except for that Tug Jordan from over in Silver Lake.

I only beat him once.

He joined up the same time as me, but I'm only 5'6' and 130 pounds and he's 6'8' and near 300 pounds dry.

Be sure to tell Walt and Elmer to hurry and join before other fellers get onto this setup and come stampeding in.

Your loving daughter,
Carol

An No I didn't SNOPES it................ it's a joke.

I can't speak for City people but I've always figured that us Country people were better at picking a place to live.

Grin Funny! And anvil, not all of us are ignorant of city life. I lived in LA, Detroit, and a few other places, but country life is for me.  I have to go to Los Angeles area in two weeks and city life is soft compared to where I'm from.  There is always exception to the rules, but generally, city folks are pretty soft.  Not a put down, just fact.

Thats kinda old but fresh as ever.
I look at inner city and wonder how folks can live that way. Actually its easy.
You live what you know. Desert bunnies wont touch lettuce, or a carrot for that matter.
They dont recognise it as food.

I should have said "why are SOME country people".

Thing is, neither one is "softer" than the other. There are aspects to either that can be difficult. There are lot more people in the city who will kill you for the few dollars in your wallet. Country life means more physical activity (maybe).

Good one The Anvil.  This thread brings to mind an old movie.  It' s sort of a B movie with Patrick Swayze called Next of Kin.  If you haven't seen it, rent it.  It's pretty funny and shows how country people take care of one another.  Smiley

I might rent it or look it up on Xfinity and see if they have it just to get to watch it again.

Typically violence is much more prevalent in the city.

However, The meth epidemic that is plaguing small town USA has made them much less safer places to live than they once were.

In my experience Country folk tend to be much more self sufficient than City folk.

There is something to be said for knowing how to hunt, fish, skin, clean, grow and cook your own vittles.

This actually reminds me of my great uncle.  He joined the army when he was a teenager during WWI.  He had been working at a saw mill in southern Louisiana.  Saw mills at the time weren't very automated.  He said the army told him that boot camp would wip him into shape.  He told me he gained weight in boot camp.  It was the best he had ever eaten in his life and much less strenuous than the saw mill.  He showed me his sharpshooter medal.  I asked him if he was a good shot and he said that had nothing to do with it, it meant an extra dollar a month.

Total horseshit. Well, except for the part about the bitching. City dwellers MIGHT bitch more but I know lots of country fold who complain until they're blue in the face about anything and everything. FFS, just listen to all of the complaining here about the government from some of these very same people..

Go to Charlestown Massachusetts and start telling the locals that they're soft. Really. Do it. Get back to me on how it works out for you.

i find it impressive that you can read a joke, yes a joke( you know what that is dont you anvil. it is a funny read) and make an argument over it. the self proclaimed expert on everything has spoken. understand some of us just want to read something that is funny or not and be done with it. instead we have to put up with your wanton desire to be the spokesperson for all of us. i understand that you think your intellect is far superior to every one elses but, guess what. you are wrong. grow the F up...

Humor needs a nugget of truth to be funny (and thus, considered "humor"). Otherwise it's just ignorant prattle. I wonder if you'd be so accomodating if I posted a joke about bumpkins being uneducated and inbred.

I have spoken and it is thus. Yea, verily much so.

Why is it assumed that when someone doesn't laugh at the joke that it's because the person not laughing has no sense of humor?

I laugh at funny jokes. This was not a funny joke. Therefore, I did not laugh. Ignorance is only funny when irony is in the mix.

What I DO find funny the people who choose to live in the country that like to claim that "country living is harder". Who do they think they're kidding? Roll Eyes What's "hard" for one person is easy for another. But I'm willing to be that those people do not choose to live in the country (which in and of itself is a pretty broad term) because it's "harder". People very rarely choose a place to live because it's the more difficult option unless they're masochists or trying to make a point for a university study or somesuch crap. You usually trade one thing for another and while country living may present more inconveniences than city living there are also plenty of inconveniences (like the crush of other humans) that come with living in the city. People who choose to live apart from humanity often do so because they can't handle other people. Does that make them tougher? I don't think so.

i was born in down town chicago, moved to the suburbs, then out to butt-fuc* egypt (north central wisconsin).  i've lived both country and city life and there is much to love about the city, and there is much to "enjoy" about the country.  first off, NONE of my friends in the city have EVER used a welder, or shot a 30-06 lever action riffle while frozen to a tree!  and many of my country friends had never left the state, let alone the county that they were born in!!  not very many city folk can ride a snowmobile to work, or school like i did!!  not very many country boys can ride the "EL" like i use to.  people in the country learn to make due with what they have, or learn how to do it.  while people in the city learn how to hire someone to do what they can't do.  what i've learned in my life is "my towns better then the next town" only because it's bigger, if only by 150 people!!  Grin  it's actually funny, people from chippewa falls feel better then people from cadott, people from eau claire feel they're better then people from chipppewa, people from st. paul (MN) feel their better then people from eau claire, people from chicago feel their better then people from st. paul.......  and everyone knows LA's better then chicago, and NY is better then LA!!

living in the country has it's good points, and so did living in the city.  personaly, i prefer the city......

There are lot more people in the city who will kill you for the few dollars in your wallet.

Also, as a business owner, when quitting time comes around, the city raised head for the door, even if the job is not done.  The country folk understand about getting it done.  They will stay until it is done.  They bitch a lot less too.

There are lot more people in the city who will kill you for the few dollars in your wallet.

Also, as a business owner, when quitting time comes around, the city raised head for the door, even if the job is not done.  The country folk understand about getting it done.  They will stay until it is done.  They bitch a lot less too.

I take it as quite an honor to have someone of Anvil's beliefs call me a liar.  cooldude

Whoa, I didn't call you a liar. You're just wrong. You may very well believe what you said.

Well, I told you exactly what happened to me in my business.  You called that :total horseshit".  This "country boy" takes that as being call a liar.

Well you're wrong again.  Wink

Look, I believe you've run into some lazy city people. But you're taking a small sample as representative of the whole. I see PLENTY of lazy country folk up my way. I also know lots of city folk who work their asses off. I don't think you're lying, I think your perception is colored. Spend some time in the city and see the frenetic pace of city life. City people often put in less hours in a day of working (then again, sometimes not) but the pace is dizzying. You are often balls-to-the-wall from start to finish. I've sat at my desk on the phone for 11 hours straight entering orders, expediting, putting bids together, putting out fires etc. with barely a break in between to empty my bladder. I've worked with people who don't put in that effort when required and they don't last.

with barely a break in between to empty my bladder. I've worked with people who don't put in that effort when required and they don't last.

i work maintenance, there are days when i work from 7am to 7pm and i'll get 1/2 an hour of "sit" time.  guess what, i live in (what you'd call) the country.  today i've done only about twenty minutes of actual work, i've got another 6 hours to go, so i ask you, am i lazy?  i've seen city folk begging for hand outs on MANY street corners in chicago, are they lazy?  and anvil, it apears to me that your "work" isn't too hard, if a person would look at the number of posts you've laid on us, YOU DON'T SEEM TO DO MUCH WORK AT WORK!!!  i'm pretty sure you spend A LOT of time on this website between your orders and phone calls!!   Grin Grin  (now who's the lazy one??)

and yes, it is funny that this all started as a comical letter from one country boy to his brothers, but in a sense it does hold trueth to the fact that young people only know of the life they've lived and they're often amazed at how others live.

one thing i know for certain, people are the same were ever you go.  there are lazy people everywere, just as there are hard workers everywere also, no mater were they are.

(face it, we're all the same.)

The "phone" thing was a previous life. I don't do that for a living anymore. My primary job (I actually have three of them) consists of furious activity followed by periods of crushing boredom. It's just the nature of the business.

Usually the ones that bitch are the city folks that moved out into the country.  Grin I HATE city folks that move to the country. Not the ones that start up a farm but the ones that move there and bitch about everyone elses farm. More and more farmland is being bought up and housing additions are added. Its sad. Dad/uncle just spent twice the land price and bought 20 ac so no city folk would buy it and build a house. Land butted up to our land.
Granted farming aint what it was when dad was a kid. Dad would spend summers baling thousands and thousands bales of straw. I hate doing 500 a summer!  Grin

As far as meth, cant recall any farm kids making the labs.

Don't forget to blame the farmers for chopping it up and selling it in the first place.
