I checked out a 2000 model tourer today in Jackson,Tn. It looked very clean except for some usual stuff on a 12 year old bike. I gave it the thrice over and noticed the right side crashbar/engine bar was missing the chrome on about 4 inches facing straight forward on the bike. I looked for any other damage underneath,etc. but found nothing. It looked like the chrome had peeled off and is still peeling. Is this unusual for this area? The left side was still good. For a moment, I thought it was damaged, but after checking both side, I think it may just be a bad chrome job. Anything to look for other than that?
It sure ran nice. I may go back and do a test ride as soon as I have time.  It had 49K on it and they asked $6200 for it. It was at a honda shop.  A couple guys walked up and told me about friends that had them and how much they liked them.  Any Jackson,Tn. guys on here that may know the bike?  It was at Bob's Honda.  Correction,Tourer, not cruiser, although I gues it cruises pretty well. Cheesy

Jim;

The crash bar can be replaced for under $150.00, at least I was able to get one last winter.  Ask the dealer to throw one in.  I don't believe this is a common problem, could have been just a bad chrome job on that one, like you said.

With 49K on her you should check brake pads, fluid colors, tire life and if you buy it, you should pull the rear tire and check the splines and drive shaft ends for rust.

On the test ride, make sure clutch works good and it shifts smooth and there isn't alot of slap in the drive line when you let off, then roll on, the gas.

If you find problems with it, come back here a do a search and you'll get answers.
Then you can go back to the dealer with an education.

That bike has at least 250K left in her.

Luckly for you, there's alot of knowledgeable Valk brothers in TN.

Thanks Hook, I just thought it strange that this was the only rust area found.  Your advice will be taken and yep, I research on here a lot and other places too. I've never bought an older bike, I just want to get a good start when I do. thanks again.
