The Navy and Marines will when this thing fails to perform as advertised.

I hate that plane so much.

My issue with any plane of that type is that the lifting fan is just dead weight under normal flying conditions.

And added complexity and maintenance, less range, less payload on target etc. etc.

The conventional version is a decent (if goofy looking) fighter. This compromised version is a mistake. But this is what happens when committees get involved in weapons procurement. They spec a jack-of-all trades concept that ends up excelling at nothing.

Hopefully it is the replacement for the harrier. I believe the Wasp is a helicopter carrier. A quick response A/C til the F/A 18s arrive?? Does anyone have range and ordinance load figures? I'm thinking not a lot and not very far!! But being out of touch for 44 years next month-well you see the problem.  2funny Young men need to run around on the flight deck-not an old fart like me.  Wink RIDE SAFE.

In my 4 years as a purple shirt I never saw one harrier land on the flight deck of the Truman. Mostly orientated with amphibious assault ships. I don't think the f-35 will cast out the hornet and super hornets any time soon. As far as maintenance issues are concerned. The new projected Gerald Ford Class Aircraft Carriers are suppose to be equipped with electromagnetic catapult systems to replace conventional steam powered ones. Supposedly steam powered catapults cause more maintenance time to aircraft. The Navy was in the mist of starting a UAV program at the time I left. If that comes into play then most likely Hornets will be downsized some.

You might want to read this before you get too big of a woodie over this plane.

Last I heard the F-22 Raptor is also grounded for technical reasons.

There's a ton of money and the American military's fighter future tied up in these two planes.
