Hi Folks.  I am after some help in that I have a fuel leak. I have for the first time removed my tank on a 2001 standard. I replaced the air filter and after dropping a spanner down by the radiator I removed the air box to retrieve it. After that I  had a mongrel time putting the air box back. When I replaced the  tank I fired the bike and it ran quite well. When I checked to make sure it would turn onto reserve it started to leak from the main fuel hose but not when it is in the on position.  Do you think I may have done something amiss putting the tank on or would it be the petcock. After all the trouble I am having I should have paid the shop 110 dollars an hour to do it. If anyone has any ideas I would be very thankful so thanks in advance.

This is a new one on me. I would think the petcock is the problem, but the only way to be sure, is to remove the tank and bench test the petcock. Apply vacum to the petcock and look at the thing as you put it in the various positions. Gas will come out, so plan to catch it in some fashion. I would put a short piece of hose on the petcock and plug it up so you can see if the petcock is leaking. Could be the fuel line is leaking because of a crack, but I would think it would leak in any of the on positions. Does it leak with the engine off? Or only when running? Maybe the petcock O-ring at the tank is leaking. Did you have the petcock off the tank? Lots of reasons this could be happening, I would think. Only way to figure it out, is to get your hands dirty. Maybe someone who lives close to you could give you a hand. It would help if we knew where you live, to find someone close.  cooldude

Were the carb bowls drained for a time? If the fuel rails were dry for a while, the O-rings can shrink and cause a leak. If that's the problem, they may swell up again and the leak will disappear. Or, you can get a kit to change them from Redeye Tech.
The issue about it not leaking with the petcock in the on position could be that the petcock on/off knob was not in the correct position when replaced.
