Just picked up a gallon of Shell Rotella T6 5W-40 synthetic oil at Wal-Mart for just over $21.  It's JASO MA certified for Japanese bikes and wet clutch operation.  Much cheaper than Amsoil MCF!

Anyone else using this particular oil?  How long are you running between oil changes--3,000; 6,000; 8,000 miles, or longer?

Better to be judged by 12, then carried by 6.

Not the Valk, but run Castrol syntec in both my jeeps. Change it at 5000, comes out almost as clean as it went in.

do a search, many post of members changing at 10k w/5w40

I just did an used oil analysis at 8k miles with amsoil 10w30/30 HD oil. came back continue to use.
I should add, this oil was in the bike for over 2 yrs to acquire that mileage. I did UOA midlife and TBN was within specs as it was at 8k miles.
changing syn oil at 5k miles is a waste of oil and time.

there is another UOA from a member using royal purple, wear patterns similar to mine.

owners manual requires 8k change out with non-syn.
boxer style engines always have low wear.
check site for subaru and other GL engines. there is also a long term thread for an ST1100.
www.bobistheoilguy.com for other oil analysis of m/c.

Honda now recommends the same oil change intervals regardless of synthetic or not in it's cars. Probably a smart move since all oils that claim to be synthetic are not created equal.
Rotella T is a class 3 dino oil hydrocracked so that it meets the not very stringent federal standards to allow it to claim to be synthetic. That could be why it's cheaper. Bobistheoilguy.com can probably explain the differences better than I can.

I have been using the same Shell Rotella T synthetic from Wal-Mart ever since I bought by Valkyrie and now have 130,000 miles.  I run a Pure oil filter (yellow one) and change oil and filter every 5,000 miles.  Never a hiccup in clutch or anything engine related.  I am sticking with it.

This is good info...  I want to know what would be the best Synth oil for my 200 Valk.  I ride it throughout the Winter.

Also use the Shell Rotella T6 in both bikes; oil/filter changed between 5-6K miles.  It's good oil, not as quiet as Amzoil, but I cannot afford Amzoil.

I have 125K on the '98 Valk. I have been using Mobil 1 with a Purolator Pure One filter for 70K and change it at 10,000 miles. Bike is still perfect. Also have an '05 Wing with 47K and change with the same intervals. Last summer I left for Nova Scotia from AZ with 5K on the oil. I changed it when I returned with 13K on the oil. Oil felt and looked good on the drain. Not even very dark; of course highway miles are easier than around town.

I have been using the Shell Rotella 5w40 for a number of years and I only change it out each spring.  The oil pretty much looks the same as the stuff I am putting in.  Mind you, I live in Canada so I don't get as many miles as some of the folk on here.

Used to use Honda brand Dino oil (in the black bottle)....changed every 3000-3500 miles when I put on 7000- 8000 a year.  Being in the NORTH up here,  the bike sits for winter...  so changing in late Fall when I put her away is sort of important.  The last 3 years, I've been using  Golden Spectro 10w/40   semi-synthetic....and also haven't been riding as much (no time) and have averaged about 4500-5500 miles per year so I change in Fall, once a year.   Oil comes out almost as clean looking as it was going in.  Cost is high- almost  $12/quart... I always change the filter too.

I was told a couple times that if you're only changing once a year, you should change it before you put it away as some acids may have built up in the oil over the previous riding season and if it's going to sit all winter, better to have fresh oil in it...

I have a friend who is an Amsoil dealer...might switch next year if the price is comparable to Spectro.

BTW...it's  0° F  here this AM so I'm having a little trouble remembering what it's like to ride  -  PMS  (parked motorcycle syndrome) is in full force here... and the Packers lost... so it's a long, cold winter yet to go!!!!

I have a 2000 I/S with 110K...have used Mobile 1 15-50 for the life of the bike with no problems...yes it starts fine in 30 deg weather.  Live in Illinois so I stop riding when the salt hits the street.    I change oil twice a year ( every 5000 miles).   Remember, dirty oil is dirty oil no matter what your using!!!!!  Watch your dipstick!
