I have a stock Honda windshield on my 98 standard that needs to be replaced.  I am either going with just the windshield from Clearview or considering going with a new fairing.

I don't feel that I get the protection from a windshield that I would really like.  My memory is probably not that good but I seem to think in the "old" days on my 750 Honda and other bikes with handlebar mounted fairings I seemed to do better.

I don't think I am interested in a radio and speakers in a fairing but if there is one that I should consider that has that option I may change my mind.

Any comments would be appreciated.

I have been looking at fairings on-line but pictures don't tell me what I need to know,  I need to know what you guys think about them.

I see there is already a question about windshield height with a fairing, same question here, I do well with the stock windshield height so I guess the same with a fairing or maybe an inch lower would be about right?  I am about 6' 1".

Thanks

I upgraded to a Clearview three years ago and have been very pleased, but I'm now installing a Woody's fairing. The Woody's is very well made and has radio and speaker cutouts. I believe he can make it without the cutouts so you can customize it as you choose, but you have to relocate the gauges.

Woody is a site sponsor.  He helps keep the lights on here.  Give Glenn a call....he can do whatever you want.

In the spirit of full disclosure, I've also taken off my OEM windshield (the best in wind protection as far as windshields go IMHO) and I'm also in the process of installing my Woody's fairing at the present too.   cooldude

i went with wide open custom because i didn't have to relo my gauges.  it comes with the stereo/speaker cutouts.
good company to work with, too.

if you're not wanting a builtin stereo, i'd go with a memphis shade batwing.  i have one on my shadow sabre and like it a lot as well.

I feel that if you are going to consider a fairing the big question needing an answer would be:

Handlebar mounted fairing

Frame mounted fairing

Once you have that answer the decision will become much easier.

Thanks,

I would be interested in hearing from you when you get it installed and get some miles on it.

What height windshield did you go with?

Thanks

I guess I have missed something, I don't think I have seen a frame mounted fairing for a standard Valkyrie.

Thanks

Woody's fairings are mounted to the forks and are solid mounted that way.

When I was shopping for a fairing, I considered a bunch of them, but narrowed down my choices to three options.....build up my own Harley fairing, a Wide Open Custom fairing or the Woody.  I ruled out a modded Harley fairing considering the work and scrounging parts involved (still like the look though).  The Wide Open Custom fairing is a plastic fairing where as Woody's are handlaid, handbuilt fiberglass.  I opted for the fiberbglass....plus his site support.

I'm putting on a 10 inch windshield on my Woody.  I told Glenn that I didn't want to stray too far from the OEM windshield and he suggested the 10 inch for me.  It's a little shorter than the OEM when mounted.  I'd rather look over my shield than through it.  However, there are other options if I decide I want a taller (or shorter) shield.  I haven't road with it yet, so I can't really comment yet on how it compares to the OEM shield.  I've read on here from others that have installed a Woody (and other fairings) that the protection is more than with just the OEM shield.  I'm hoping for and expect similar results.

Woody's uses the same windshield as Harley fairings do so there's plenty of options out there to try.  Plus, if you look around, you can find replacements pretty cheap if you want to experiment with different heights.  Glen has a link on his site to the shields that he recommends and supports.

You can bling up a Woody's fairing too if you want.  Hoppe fairings offers two different dress up kits that will also work on the Woody's fairing.  They ain't cheap, but if you want some bling.....

If you look around on Woody's site, you'll find some fairings with those Hoppe additions installed on them.  There's at least one Valk that sports them and I think if you look in the Harley section, there's a pic of the other Hoppe version in there too.

Not a very good pic I know, but this is where I was at a couple days ago with my install......

Thanks Everyone,

I'll save my money and in a month or so get a Woody's fairing.
