Our 1st ride went to Gettysburg “The Blue Gray Ride” our 2nd  was to Kentucky the “Whiskey Run” and last year was “Hillbilly Highways”…We had so many people asking us to go back to W.Va. we decided that was exactly what we’d do, so we’re heading to SW. Va and on into W.Va….The heart of Appalachia Mountain country where Whiskey, Gunpowder and Coal Dust are the main staple….

We’ll be riding out from Marion, Va. across the newly designated motorcycle road called “The Back of the Dragon” into Tazewell,Va.  From there we’ll cross into W. Va. Ridiing hwy. 16 to towns like War, W.Va. and Welch W.Va where the local sheriff was gunned down on the courthouse steps during the mining wars, we’ll ride over to Pocahontas, Va. To take a walking tour of an old coal mine that was hand dug years ago, they have a little museum next to the mine  that you can also go to…from there its back into the mountain country where the coal miner wars were made so famous, this was the only place in America that I know of where American troops fired machine guns at American citizens for picketing against the big mining corporations …I’ve seen many a post on this board whether folks thought the military would fire on civilians, these people that live back in this part of the country can answer that question for ya…where we will be riding is not tourist country this is the real thing you’ll be seeing, a lot of these little towns look almost the same as they did back in the 20’s and 30’s.

We haven’t got all the details worked out yet, we still need to make our scouting run and make the hotel preparations and such, Joe and I will get all the info out as soon as we complete the scouting run..I just thought I’d let ya’ll know we do intend to have this ride ready to go and we’ll keep you updated on the hotel accommodations and schedule of the riding events…hope we see all of you on this ride, so mark those dates down for this spring ride..!

This is a photo of LadyDraco's trike inside of the old mine we plan on visiting..

Smiley  That sounds very interesting.  I was thinkin about trying to put together just such a ride this coming summer.  Will ya'all be including the covered bridge at Philippi the the site of the first land battle of the civil war?

There is an old antique gas station in the middle of Kingwood that ya might like to see.

I grew up in WV and just sold my WV property in 2010.
I hope I can make that ride with ya.

Unless you are taking summer classes, I'd think you'd be done.  At Penn State, we were always out by early May.  Graduation, the week after finals, was May 14.  Hope to see you there. cooldude

I'd love to find an old gas pump like those. I'd just hate to have it outside in the weather, even thought that's what they're meant for. Maybe someday,,,,.  Smiley

Man I am pissed.  :tickedoff:My daughter graduates from high school on the 8th so I won't be there till the 9th at the earliest. Unless it snows and they use up there snow days and push the graduation back.  Come on SNOW.  PS I hate snow but love those roads in WV. Cool

I was born and raised in Northfork, W.Va. so I will definitely make this ride!  All those coal towns are pretty much the same as when I was growing up in McDowell county.  We will probably ride right past the football field I played on in high school.  We can't get up the hollow to the coal mines my dad worked in for 42 years but we could ride up to Crumpler.  It is one of the biggest ATV sights in the country now.  I'm really looking forward to this ride!

Mike, we're not going toward Lewisburg, at one time we were considering that area but decided on the coal country...

Wolf, I use to ride that area around Philippi quite a bit and we did consider that area....W.Va. has so many great riding areas it was hard to decide which one to choose from...we chose the coal country because it was less touristism and the area is almost untouched, what ever dollars we spend in that area will be much appreciated by the locals also...

This is a shot of the coal mine we will be visiting...

Some of views heading to Rte 16...

Great riding country in W.Va. with good roads for motorcycles...

Hope you can join us on this ride, it should be a good one.. cooldude

Lookin' forward to it Don....Maybe we can hook-up in the next month or so to figure it out.Wimp goes in the hospital in a few days for some serious surgery and will be down and out for awhile. He had said he'd like to ride up with me when we scout out the ride so I'm hoping he heals fast.
