I got the sad news today that two of my best riding buddies were involved in a bad accident.  A car pulled out from a business and into their path.  My friend Bernie is now in serious condition and his girlfriend, Debbie Benoit was killed instantly.

Last summer the two of them escorted me all through the Black Hills during the Sturgis rally.  Bernie had a super custom Harley and was an excellent rider.  I'm sure if anybody could have avoided the collision, Bernie could have.

This is one of those things that just leaves you numb.  It's like a bad dream, I wish I could wake up from it.

HERE'S A FOLLOWUP

I talked with my friend Bernie a couple times today.  Although his pelvis is broken in three places, has a broken hand and got stiches, they discharged him from the hospital last night at 2am.

He is in a lot of pain but says he'll make it.

The motorcycle hit the driver's door and left front fender.  Bernie wound up on the hood of the car and Debra flew over him and landed in the street 25 ft away.  She never moved again after hitting the ground.

Straight across the street from the collision they have an ambulance base.  The screech and sound of impact had all the paramedics running to help in seconds.

There was nothing that could have been done to help Debra.  The cornor pronounced her dead on the scene.

I told Bernie of all the prayers and well wishes from our group, and he wanted me to thank all of you.

Bernie and Debra in Deadwood earlier this year.

You read about this kind of thing way too often, they probably never had a chance.  Prayers go out to both families from Ohio.

“You can shed tears that she is gone,
or you can smile because she has lived.
You can close your eyes and pray that she'll come back,
or you can open your eyes and see all she's left.
Your heart can be empty because you can't see her,
or you can be full of the love you shared.
You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday,
or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday.
You can remember her only that she is gone,
or you can cherish her memory and let it live on.
You can cry and close your mind,
be empty and turn your back.
Or you can do what she'd want:
smile, open your eyes, love and go on.”
