I hit reserve on an unmodified pingle with a stock height main inlet.  Fifteen miles later I made it to the gas station.  Bless its heart...it was still running, but not for much longer.

There was a time when 5.589 gals of gasoline was about 60 cents. Scary part is it could double or triple what you paid for that amount. Glad yer lady didn't put you to walkin.  Wink RIDE SAFE.

I have had to call the gas inspectors in Albuquerque a couple times. I think some of the gas stations are ripping people off. Once I put 21 gallons in an 18.2 gallon tank. I complained to the attendant and he said you must have filled the neck. Ya right, 3 gallons in a 2"x3' tube?

Another time I did put 5.8 gallons in my standard.

Another time I slid my credit card in grabbed the hose and hadnt even stuck  it in my tank and already had $.13 charged to my credit card. Angry

Here in the Detroit area we had a bunch of smart fellas at a few of the local Gas stations...

They reprogramed the Computer in the pump to start charging an extra few cents or so per gallon after the pump had pushed more than like $25...... theory they had was that after that amount someone was filling up and wouldn't not notice and extra buck or two... the pump alway way right because weight and measures only measure a lower amount...not sure exacly, but i think its 10 gallons or so.....

They were right for a while..... they got away with it for several years til someone noticed something odd and called it to Weights and measures and showed them......

There was a report several years ago on 60 minutes about digital circuit boards unscrupulous station managers could buy, to install in their gas pumps.  They pad the numbers when signalled by a garage door opener type control.  They don't pad at exactly 5 gallons - the size tank the weights and measures people use.  I have been the victim of this device at specific Phillips 66 stations in the Denver area.  Example - I still had the std tank; I was not on reserve but the pump said 6 gallons - it could have been at most 4.4 gallons.  This was the Phillips station on Arapahoe just west of I-25.  I called the weights and measure people.  They said it's a real problem - they only test infrequently and on a regular schedule - though they will test if they get complaints.  A lot of good that does when the ripoff device doesn't scam at their test volume.
