Hi All,
Just bought my first valkyrie Thursday of this week. Been looking around on the board and I could not find the answer to this. Why do they call it the fat lady.

Funny, I thought it was because it was called a Valkyrie, and the cartoons and comedy movies always had a fat lady singing the last song. But I watch a lot of TV!

Didn't Honda do a Valkyrie ad that said 'The Fat Lady Has Sung'. That's where I thought it came from.

i could be wrong but from my understanding: First of all, looking at the origin of the name, the Valkyrie was a female...here are a couple definitions:
The Valkyrie is, in the oldest strata of belief, a corpse goddess, represented by the carrion-eating raven. The name in Old Norse, valkyrja, means literally, "chooser of the slain."
In Norse mythology, a valkyrie (from Old Norse valkyrja "chooser of the slain") is one of a host of female figures who decides who falls and dies in battle
The Norse legend showing gods and goddesses going into battle the dragon was also a common character. I always though that was why it was always part of the symbols for the bike. So to begin with she is female... then as someone earlier mentioned because of the bike's (her) size she became the answer to the "fat boy" i.e. THE FAT LADY.

Yes!! FPG52 has the correct information regarding the Vaklkyries of Norse legend! That's the reason I chose 'Freyja', as the name for my trike. Freyja has been said to be the Queen of the Valkyries. She's on my tank and side covers as seen below; Now, getting back to the OP's question and agreeing with the statement above about the Valk's ass end being so large, my trike takes it to a whole new level of a fat rear end in the next photo!! LOL

Why I like to Play Wagner down the Road......... From Wiki
Fred R. Shapiro found and published an example in The Yale Book of Quotations which appeared in the Dallas Morning News on 10 March 1976: Despite his obvious allegiance to the Red Raiders, Texas Tech sports information director Ralph Carpenter was the picture of professional objectivity when the Aggies rallied for a 72–72 tie late in the SWC tournament finals. "Hey, Ralph," said Bill Morgan, "this... is going to be a tight one after all." "Right", said Ralph, "the opera ain’t over until the fat lady sings." In the same newspaper on 26 November 2006, Steve Blow followed up the discovery by contacting Bill Morgan about the incident: "Bill vividly remembers the comment and the uproar it caused throughout the press box. He always assumed it was coined on the spot. 'Oh, yeah, it was vintage Carpenter. He was one of the world’s funniest guys,' said Bill, a contender for that title himself." The imagery of Richard Wagner's opera suite Der Ring des Nibelungen and its last part, Götterdämmerung, is typically the one used in depictions accompanying reference to the phrase. The "fat lady" is the valkyrie Brünnhilde, who is traditionally presented as a very buxom lady with horned helmet, spear and round shield (although Brünhilde actually wears a winged helmet[citation needed]). Her aria lasts almost twenty minutes and leads directly to the end of the opera, though the character Hagen has one final line, "Zurück vom Ring!", to sing after Brünnhilde's death, and there is also a substantial orchestral finale.[3] As Götterdämmerung is about the end of the world (or at least the world of the Norse gods), in a very significant way "it is [all] over when the fat lady sings." [edit]
Hence the Moniker.... "Fat Lady"
BTW the Ring trilogy just finished at the Met...... And the Lady playing Brunhilde had a few extra pounds Brad

And one other thing... anyone who ever rode the Valk for the first time, swung their leg over the saddle, grabbed the handle bars and said, "sh*t... that tank is as big as Texas." It was/is phat! Unless you were downgrading from a Boss Hoss, the Fat Lady was big, big, big. Intimidating, even, until that downshift into first gear, only to discover that the beast was so easy to handle.

Haven't read this whole thing but can't believe no one else remembers this--- Look up the phrase " It ain't over till the fat lady sings for that reference. When the Valkyrie first came out I believe it was Cycle World that did an article and said "The fat lady has sung" in reference to the Valkyrie being the ultimate cruiser to be built.

She is called "The Fat Lady" and Harleys are sometimes called "Bad Boys". She likes to spank the Bad Boys when they try to act up.

Honda definitely didn't shy away from the phrase... (Now they'd get canceled for being fat-phobic or something...)
